I came back to the United States after living most of my early life in the Dominican Republic in order to pursue post-secondary studies in the physical sciences. I majored in biology, chemistry, and mathematics at Manhattanville College and graduated with departmental and Summa Cum Laude honors. I recently completed my Master's thesis on imaginary quadratic number fields as a mathematics graduate student at New York University and will be applying to Ph.D. programs for the Fall of 2014 to continue research in either abstract algebra or mathematical logic.
In the meantime, I work as a tutor in math, science, Spanish, and English as a Second Language. I have been tutoring for the past 10 years and have helped over 400 students reach their full academic potential. Overall, I calmly and actively seek to fill the gaps in understanding my students may have in our typical ninety minute sessions. I emphasize practice, practice, and more practice when it comes down to math problems. I also love to point out and ask my students why a certain formula or process is rigorous and accurate. I relish the logic behind mathematical proofs and wish to help my students appreciate the unique elegance of such a demonstration. Similarly, when working on chemistry word problems, I work out an example or two and then encourage my students to emulate what I did. I also quiz them throughout the sessions. For instance, if functional groups are being studied, I ask them to explain why amines have lower boiling points than alcohols with similar molecular and structural formulas. If pressed for a hint, I tell them to consider the respective differences in hydrogen bonding. Additionally, as a native Spanish speaker, I am fully aware of the difficulty of learning languages and know what students need in order to remain interested as they start rolling their R's or memorize stem-changing verbs. Regardless of the subject I am tutoring, I remind students regularly that preparing index cards will make studying much easier by helping them collect and organize key diagrams, formulas, and definitions in a convenient, portable format.
My clients know they can count on me for constant help with their coursework as my sessions provide a relaxed learning environment that bolsters their understanding and accomplishment. Over the years, I learned patience and empathy are the most important contributions I can offer to enhance my students' learning experience. Required courses in high school and college can be uninspiring or fast-paced, and the amount of material that needs to be mastered by the final exam date is overwhelming. Tutoring sessions help students overcome these frustrating circumstances by focusing the pupil's attention on the important details; on the patterns and commonalities present in the concepts, the notes, and the assigned problems; and on the study skills they will need to eventually become self-learners. As such, I also encourage discussion with and continuous feedback from my students so as to make sessions engaging and to fully develop motivation and analytical thinking.
Sessions are always at least 60 minutes in length. To avoid any confusion, my cancellation policy is the following:
*if you contact me at least 24 hours prior to a scheduled session to cancel or reschedule, no fee will be assessed;
*if you cancel or wish to reschedule the day of the session, I will assess a fee equivalent to one hour's worth of tutoring.

As an honors math major, I am well-acquainted with all levels of high school math. In particular, I can help Algebra 2 students with: graphs and solutions of linear and quadratic equations and inequalities; expressions, functions, and inequalities involving roots, ratios of polynomials, radicals, and complex fractions; factoring using theory of polynomials; conic sections; combinatorics; matrices; systems of equations and inequalities; inverse functions; and exponential and logarithmic functions and related problems.
I majored in biology and took several upper-level lab courses at my alma mater. In addition to Principles of Biology, which covers the basics of molecular and environmental branches, I took courses in biochemistry, molecular cell biology, microbiology, anatomy and physiology, invertebrate zoology, marine biology, and cell culture techniques. A few years have passed since I finished my biology research and decided to focus my graduate studies in pure mathematics, but I still find the material interesting. I can definitely help honors and introductory biology students focus their studies.

I have tutored college and AP chemistry students since 2005. I currently help advanced high school students in the Columbus area . Over the last few summers, I have also helped students at Colgate University, Long Island University, The Ohio State University, and Columbus State Community College with their coursework in general/introductory chemistry. I can also help with organic chemistry, but I may need to review the material as I usually only tutor it once a year, depending on demand.
Since I was a math major, I had to master elementary math before moving on to advanced proofs. I am patient and will help you learn the material with ease if you put in the time and effort. Practice makes perfect.
I enjoy helping students with geometrical proofs. You have to make sure each statement logically follows from those preceding them. Geometry is a great course in which I can help students explore the concepts of congruency and similarity of figures in the plane as well as 3-dimensional space. We also get a chance to study problems related to distances, areas, and volumes while also learning about symmetry transformations. The properties of circles, quadrilaterals, and triangles are fascinating, and with plenty of practice problems, students will learn to appreciate that fact.
I have plenty of experience performing Gaussian elimination and calculating determinants. I also know how to find the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a matrix or linear transformation. I also have experience working with unitary, symmetric, skew-symmetric, and other types of matrices. Working with the theoretical aspects of fields and vector spaces are actually my favorite aspects of this subject. I am familiar with some applications and the basic uses in coding theory. Nonetheless, I lack solid programming experience for numerical analysis applications.
As part of my math major requirements, I took an upper-level course in mathematical logic as an elective and got an A. I only lost a fraction of a point on a midterm for not citing a theorem from lecture; otherwise, I would have gotten perfect score in the class. I love constructing formal proofs using a first order language and predicate calculus. Deducing that a statement is true as a consequence of the rules of inference applied to a set of axioms is most entertaining. I doubt most students go beyond truth tables and naive set theory, but I can help them out with those as well.
I have helped dozens of middle schoolers and students in junior high with prealgebra in Pickerington, Reynoldsburg, and Columbus, OH. I have also tutored prealgebra students in Westchester County, NY. Moreover, several of my students have now successfully completed honors algebra courses and higher.

I worked as an SAT Prep instructor for The Princeton Review, Inc. as a junior and senior in college. I also helped several students in Westchester County, NY with their SAT Math Level I and II subject tests. I am a native Spanish speaker who completed bilingual elementary and high school education in the Dominican Republic. I am completely fluent as I can read, write, and speak in Spanish. In terms of academic units in the US, I also scored 80/80 on the College Board CLEP exams in Spanish and earned 12 college credits equivalent to 4 semesters of introductory and intermediate Spanish necessary for my alma mater's general education requirements. In Ohio, I have tutored students from the Pickerington, Reynoldsburg, and Columbus high schools. In the past two years, I have also helped 5 adult students in the area with their conversational Spanish skills for their trips to Peru and the Caribbean. I also translate legal and technical documents from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English.
I enjoy the algebraic aspects of manipulating expressions with trigonometric functions. I love proving identities; ever since I took my first lessons in trigonometry in high school, I can't get enough of these types of problems. Since I took Calculus, Differential Equations, Complex Variables and Abstract Algebra later on, my fondness for trigonometry has not dwindled, but grown. Transformations (by doing shifts, reflections, and dilations/contractions) and periodicity are also very interesting, but I have to spend some time explaining the symmetries and movements to students. Nonetheless, I must admit that I hate graphing polar equations. I had to do the graphs by hand without polar graphing paper, and it takes me forever to make a neat graph. Solving trigonometric functions is an exciting challenge since you have to be wary of the constraints imposed by the domain of the inverse trigonometric functions and the families of angles before you can write down the primary and general solutions. This is especially useful in calculus, differential equations, and complex variables.
