Any educational problem can be fixed, no matter how hard it seems.
There is hope.
Above the level of hope is competence.
I am referring here to the competence of a skilled tutor who has taken on hundreds of students over a fourteen-year period and turned each one of them into high-performing scholars.
When you have the knowledge, certainty and willingness to accept challenging students and get results 100% of the time, hope is no longer just a byword. It's reality.
I taught Math in five states and I have been providing tutoring for over fourteen years in the areas of Study Skills and Math.
I have found that there are very specific reasons why a student would have trouble studying. Knowing these and how to remedy them opens the door to real learning. I consider it vital for all my students to be able to study independently after the tutoring. This is an area that is generally neglected by modern education.
I have also found that continued student success depends heavily on parental involvement at the lower levels, while at the upper levels older students respond best when given motivation and study skills that enable them to learn without stress.
With the advent of the ubiquitous internet, students can now access knowledge at the touch of a button. Education in the twenty-first century must equip them with the ability to sift through tons of information and extract usable facts that can lead to successful innovations. Rote learning has to assume a subordinate role to extrapolation as critical reasoning skills are amplified. My tutoring approach seeks to increase curiosity and interest while challenging the students, at all times, to think for themselves. This results in students who can easily assimilate, evaluate and create knowledge. Most importantly, they learn how to excel in any academic environment and they easily master new and unfamiliar topics.
When the Babylonians invented Algebra a few millenia past, little did they know that it would be used by millions of people on seven continents.
The word 'algebra' is actually derived from the name of the Arabic method presented in a textbook written in Baghdad about 1200 years ago.
Most students are familiar with solving for the unknown in basic arithmetic. Algebra takes this a step further by offering a sytematic way of solving real-life problems and calculating unknown quantities.
The majority of students encounter two problems in this subject: trouble with word problems and insufficient math discipline. There are some formulae that need to be memorized, of course, but ultimately a student's success depends on five factors.
0. An understanding of how the student can use Algebra in his own life
1. A thorough grasp of Fractions and Pre-Algebra
2. Knowledge of key terminology
3. An ability to translate word problems into equations and vice versa
4. Sufficient drill and practice while maintaining proper Math Discipline & Rigor.
Given the above, one will find that Algebra may be easy after all.
Chess helps students develop patience, planning skills, tenacity and strategy. It is also referred to as 'The World's Greatest Game' for good reason. A chess virtuoso like Chicago's own Bobby Fischer (World Champion 1972-1975) combines flawless technique with spectacular art to paint out a beautiful canvas that is best savored by those who know the rules of the game.
As the Champion of the Boston March Open Tournament (2009), I am held in high regard by players in Massachusetts. My ability to teach makes me best positioned to help beginners and experienced players alike with chess skills.
As a U.S National Master I am keen to help many students learn this game from novice level all the way up to the professional league.
I have helped dozens of students complete their General Education Development tests including Math, Science and the other subjects. My approach is tailored to each individual so that more time is spent on areas of weakness and less on areas of strength, although we do consolidate these by continuous practice.
Most students I've worked with have limited time so my solution is to cut straight to the chase, give them the exact data they need and build the skills necessary to pass the test. Extraneous material is avoided at all costs.
With Geometry we enter the realm of the 1st Amendment particularly as it relates to free speech, for here you can make any assertion as long as you can prove it. Nothing is taken for granted and everything must be seen to be believed.
Geometry demands that the student know many theorems, axioms and postulates. A theorem is a statement that can be proved. A postulate is a statement that is assumed to be true. An axiom is simply a factual statement borrowed from Algebra.
The graphs, lines, real-life applications and diagrams that abound in Geometry make it quite friendly to visual learners. Once one has overcome the hurdle of proofs and new terminology, one will find that Geometry rewards those who are willing to work consistently while integrating new lessons with old.
The student who has mastered Algebra 1 will find himself called upon to utilize those skills in various equations that show up in Geometry. The student who hasn't will come close to scoring but somehow never makes it into the big league.
After weakness in Algebra, the next major source of trouble in Geometry is simply pacing.
The question that must be asked is:
How fast can this student thoroughly learn a new concept and build on previous knowledge without becoming confused in the rush to meet standards?
The ISEE offers many students an opportunity to write their own future by getting into their school of choice. ISEE stands for Independent School Entrance Examination. It is offered by ERB, the Educational Records Bureau.
The ISEE exam covers Verbal (vocabulary), Reading Comprehension, Quantitative Reasoning (ability to think with and use Math in unique situations) and finally it covers Mathematics.
The test has different levels for different grades: Lower, Middle and Upper.
After tutoring many students in the ISEE I have found that the best preparation starts with a solid education in Basics. A reading program that emphases depth and breadth of extensive reading on a daily basis would be the ideal prep. The singular difference between students on the ISEE is simply vocabulary, knowledge of.
As for the test itself, I have found that students need 6-12 weeks to prepare for the ISEE proper. Utilizing texts from various test-prep publishers as well as the ERB website itself, I have been able to quickly teach test-taking skills as well as subject content to excellent results.
I studied Educational Methodology as part of a brand-new system developed and tested on several continents across a wide spectrum of students from different backgrounds and of different ages.
The common outcome of this program is that students have a renewed interest in subjects that were previously 'boring' or 'difficult' or 'useless' to them. They begin to learn and study independently. They score way above average on all types of tests. They experience a gain of several reading levels.
They begin to modify their own behaviour while acquiring a repertoire of new skills and new habits that will last them a lifetime.
In short, study and learning becomes easy, even joyful.
I have seen numerous results with these techniques over 14 years and I'm always amazed at the consistency of results.
