I instill a deep level of understanding of the material that will not only prepare the student for tests, but also be able to apply these concepts to real world problems and build upon this knowledge in future classes. I encourage multiple ways of solving problems and never judge the student for not understanding quickly enough. I blend in critical thinking skills and estimations. I often estimate seemingly difficult calculations and show how I got there, which causes students to stop relying on their calculator. I concentrate on improving the student's mental flexibility about how to apply the rules to the system. Once understood, you can apply this skill to most math and science problems. Above all else, I seek to encourage an understanding and appreciation for the material, sometimes with puns and jokes.
I prefer to talk about Physics, Chemistry, and Calculus as they are thoroughly interrelated; however, I often must strengthen the student's Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, or Precalculus in order to get the most out of Physics or Chemistry. I currently offer services in Manhattan, Staten Island, and Brooklyn. I am more of an academic coach than a tutor. I am always available by phone or email for any questions. I will rarely just give the answer; I prefer to walk you toward the solution and assist you past your weak points. I am excellent at finding the piece of information or logic that allows everything to flow for you. I customize each lesson for the way you think. I relate the material to things you already understand and show how it is interconnected. I often make up examples using your hobbies and interests and can even show you how certain equations affected history or art. I try to be as efficient as possible with our time by taking personal notes and reflecting on what did or didn't work. After an adequate level of understanding is achieved, I focus on nuances in the material for speed on tests and implications to our daily lives that flow from taking the concepts to their natural conclusions. I enjoy seeing that moment when something the student was struggling with becomes easy. If you ever think you do not understand the material much better after one of our meetings, there is no charge.
I passed the rigorous 8 hour long Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE) which tested every math and science topic I offer and some. I had John as a tutor for Calculus 1 and 2 at Rutgers in New Brunswick. Both classes are very difficult and prior to having him as a tutor I was in no place to pass the class at all. I passed both classes thanks to his help despite having possibly the worst Calc 1 professor on the planet. John never had issues with scheduling and always got back to any questions I had, even when not Calc related (I also take Physics and occasionally had a question or 2, which he had no problems helping me with). "We went over problems that mostly dealt with the Carnot cycle and the second law (q = Tds). Energy entering the system is positive; energy leaving the system is negative (for both q and w). We went over an efficiency problem where work, q at the hot isotherm, and q at the cold isotherm are found. We went over calculating the change in enthalpy, internal energy, entropy, and Gibbs free energy. We calculated the change in entropy through a phase change and noted the similarities and differences between a liquid warming a solid through a phase change (q)"
John knows his material and will provide an excellent guidelines to solving the problems. What is important to me and I'm sure other students are tutors who not only show the solutions to problems, but that also teach you in your level and speed and give you a chance to understand visually what is happening in the problem. And John succeeded in delivering all that. Every problem that we do, he helps me figure out the solution on my own so I can do other problems and succeed on tests. I only wish John would be our professor in my class because I would definitely succeed.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. Calculus is the math that Newton invented when he realized he needed stronger tools to solve Physics problems. I like how Calculus uses rather simple concepts to solve problems that would be nearly impossible using more classical techniques. After Calculus, I went on to study Multivariable Calculus and Differential Equations, two disciplines that build on Calculus and are extremely helpful to many professions, especially engineers. Over the years, I have helped many confused students realize that Calculus is much simpler than most of the math that they have seen before.
Chemical Engineers require a strong background in chemistry mostly to make sure that what you are doing won't explode. In my quest for my Masters in Chemical Engineering, I studied physical chemistry, organic chemistry, and took several labs applying those lessons. At first, chemistry can be really tough because it seems like there is always an exception to the rule, but once you begin to think like an atom, things get less electron cloudy. I can help you forgive your grievances with chemistry and let your pi-bonds be pi-bonds.
I have prepared students for the TACHS, SHSAT,COOP,and HSPT and scored in the 99th percentile in the COOP and HSPT myself. Using my background in Latin, I help students break vocabulary words into their bases. Math is usually the most difficult area, so I spend the most time here and stress estimations and proportions. Students usually see how verbal proportions are analogies. I focus on the common ideas in Grammar and Reading Comprehension and use paper cutouts to elucidate the tricky "Abilities" section of the TACHS. I use expected value and other mathematical techniques to teach optimal strategies for test taking.
At first, physics didn't make any sense to me either. Before this, most of school is memorization and regurgitation, but physics is more of a way of thinking. After patiently working at it, something clicked and it transformed the way I look at the world. This valuable method of thinking is applicable across many disciplines. Chemical Engineering is the study of applying many of the same phenomena in kinematic physics to liquids and gases instead of solid blocks.
