Math can be fun! And I work at keeping it that way. Patiently balancing the objectives of deadlines and the student's absorption rate, requires me to sometimes throttle the pace of the lessons. I'll be sensitive to where your student is at, and where he must be.

My style for tutoring below the college level is to sustain the momentum created by the textbook owned by the student. On my own, I will usually obtain my own copy of the student's textbook. Sometimes parents already have a "teacher's version" of the text, which I may use to provide further guidance. I am flexible enough to adapt and time my style, so that there is continuity between tutoring sessions and the text. When I am not there, we do not want the student puzzled by a difference in tone between tutoring notes, and the text he is studying on his own. I will invoke my own insights only to enhance the student's grasp of the material, or (in rare cases) to make up for deficiencies in the text.

College level courses, by their nature, call for a multi-facted approach to the material. While I still will use the official course text as the center of gravity, a primary objective is to induce the student to see the material from a variety of perspectives. This is what leads to mastery.

I've enjoyed free-lance tutoring of High School students in Math, Algebra, Trig and Geometry. Few things are more precious than that "aha" moment on a kid's face. One girl I tutored hated math, but got a high enough score on the ACT to bypass Math classes in college - much to her relief.

I have been a successful Electronics Engineer for 37 years, specializing in Power Management, Industrial, Automotive, Consumer Electronics and Microchip Design. The assignments I have fulfilled demanded mastery of mathematical modelling, statistics, semiconductor physics and computer simulation/modeling. I'm thus able to teach Integral and Differential Calculus, Physics and Electrical Engineering to the College level. At the professional level, I've taught Microchip Design and Electronics Engineering, serving at two schools in the Chicago area.

The ACT Math section has its own unique strategy. The calculator must not have certain features, and the sub-topics are portioned out with an emphasis on Algebra, Geometry and Trig.

For the Algebra part, I can refresh all aspects of your training, and give you special shortcuts to spotting the correct answer quickly, among the 5 choices you have for each question.

The Geometry and Trigonometry part will also require us to review your training, with a special emphasis on logic and deduction.

There is a special kind of strategy required for this test, but you will go in there empowered to be at your best. While there are no trick questions on the ACT, you will be shown the ways that many applicants trick themselves ... and you will avoid those traps.

From 2007-2010, I performed private tutoring of High School Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry & ACT Prep Math. One special student, a girl desiring to major in English, hated Math. But I got her an ACT score high enough that she was not required to study it any more in her college of choice.

While my mastery of mathematics is strong, up through college Calculus, my best qualification is patience. There are many ways to solve these problems, and when we find the approach that clicks for your student, we will be off and running!

Most inquiries for tutoring assistance come under the "Algebra 2" category. Here the scope of sub-topics is broad and, predictably, the student can feel overwhelmed. What I have found most often is that the student just needs to approach the problems with a fresh perspective. I have developed a mutiple-approach method to Algebra-2 subjects, so that if one method of interpretation doesn't work, we find another one that does.

Inevitably, "the light bulb goes on", and the student's confidence is restored. Suddenly, it's fun and cool. That golden "aha" moment has arrived.

There are certain disciplines I will require of the student. These are simple techniques for avoiding the "dumb mistakes" that can crush an otherwise fine student. With a little extra effort, a big payoff in accomplishment returns.

Though electrical engineering is a broad subject, I can coach others in a number of topics. Herein, I will first post some professional qualifications, and conclude with specific experience I have in teaching.

I have an MSEE ('79) and BSEE ('76) from the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, IL. After that, countless hours of professional development training. I am also a licensed professional engineer in the states of Illinois and Missouri.

My strongest professional assignments were with Bell Labs (13 years), and Motorola (5.5 years). I am presently a self-employed electronics consultant, specializing in power management, smart batteries, microchip design, and industrial electronics. I also own a surveying/mapping company in Missouri, specializing in computer-based mapping technology.

I have been published several times in professional journals. I've given peer reviewed papers, and one workshop tutorial, through the prestigious IEEE (Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers). I usually won first prize in cross-training lectures we gave each other, as part of a sales-engineering team when I was with AT&T microelectronics.

I have twice taught microchip design at The Midwest College of Engineering in Northern Illinois (They were later absorbed by IIT, my alma mater), and for one semester there I taught feedback and control systems. For one year, I taught and managed an electronics technician program at a post-secondary school in Chicago, the Taylor Business School.

My style of engineering has always been to "share the knowledge". Coaching and mentoring young engineers has always come naturally to me. I cannot tutor all areas of electronics. No one can. I just want to be there for budding engineers who can benefit from my fun way of approaching this incredible field.

I have no desire to tutor outside of what I can offer, and if I was contacted by a potential client, I'd want to assess the fit before moving forward. On this basis, maybe you can deem me approved.

In anticipation of this, my methods employ explanations and examples using the real world around us. Geometric objects in the room, or things commonly known outside, will be employed to envision the important principles of Geometry.

One further benefit of studying Geometry is the practice of composing formal proofs. I will induce your student to apply patience and rigor to this valuable method.

In PreCalculus, the student learns to look closer at the basic Mathematical Laws, which reveal the secrets of The Universe. If Calculus is the Mountain of Gold for understanding Science, then PreCalculus is the mountain you climb to get there.

There are important disciplines of method and perspective, which I teach in PreCalculus. Being proficient in Calculus, I can guide the Pre-Calc student on where these topics are headed, and provide the proper emphasis. Old issues of Trigonometry, Geometry and even Basic Algebra, are re-framed and revisited here, so that once the lectures start rolling in formal Calculus, The Student effortlessly commences the heavy lifting.

As your tutor in Precalculus, my first priority will be your tests and homework at hand. But I will also be providing glimpses of why these topics will be important going forward, and coaching you on methods for reducing those dumb mistakes that otherwise plague us all.

Though somewhat controversial, the SAT is still used by many colleges to assess incoming students. The Mathematics part avoids the high level stuff, such as calculus, and focuses on basic algebra, and geometry. A significant part of the test is based on word problems.

I have developed a decoder method for interpreting word problems. With practice, you will lock into those word problems quickly. Like with the ACT Math, the SAT has a tendency for Non-worded math problems to have an answer set, which works like lightning for the observant test-taker. Students with the proper training and insight can spot the right answer quickly, when they know what to watch for.

Guiding the student through Trigonometry is especially rewarding, as it draws together Geometry and Mathematics. It is especially cool to know that everything is on that piece of paper before us; no outside information needed. I can help the student memorize the basic formulas, so that they are always at hand, and show how to re-derive the secondary formulas if need be. I can be especially patient with students who seem to "hate" the material.
