The world truly is becoming a smaller place. Whether you're connected through Facebook, Twitter, Google+ etc., we all have to use some sort of language to communicate. However, sometimes we need to master a foreign language in order to get our point across. Therefore, I would love to use my passion for the Spanish to help those students in need. Whether it is for school, work, or for pleasure, Spanish is a language that can be both useful and fun while learning it.
Spanish has always been in my life in some form or another. I have been studying the language for over 15 years now, and I am part of the National Spanish Honors Society. Plus, I have lived and studied in Spain while finishing my Spanish degree from the University of Illinois. Recently, I finished my Spanish translation certification from the University of Chicago. I am also definitely used to challenges with language barriers as I have spent time as a volunteer interpreter/translator with Latino clients at the Eastern Central Illinois Refugee Mutual Assistance Center, and I believe that these experiences have greatly added to my overall patience as a language assistant.
Teaching wise, I utilize a mixture of different techniques. Communication is key, so I try to integrate reading, writing, speaking, and listening into all of the exercises we do. However, not all students learn the same way, so I try to recognize students' strengths and play to them in order to not only work hard but also intelligently. I must emphasize though that in order to learn a language, you must constantly be practicing it in order to truly learn it. Therefore, I also try to make lessons fun by using modern day examples of language that go beyond the classroom as in using music, television, magazines, newspapers, food, and movies. These real life examples provide a thought provoking stimulus in the learner that no grammar drill can.
Not only do I teach Spanish, but I also can help with History, writing, geography, study skills, and organizational skills.
This is just a sample of my background, but if you would like to learn Spanish or another subject now, contact me!
I have a Master's Degree in applied linguistics/TESOL. I also just finished teaching over 600 children at a South Korean elementary school. Before this, I did a three month practicum teaching adults survival English at the College of DuPage.
My historical focus has always been on European History. Starting in high school, I took and passed the AP European History exam with a 5. I then went on to get my History degree from the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign.
I have traveled all over the world and am fascinated by studying its ever changing socio-political landscape. Plus, being a History major, Geography is key to understanding events and the consequences of said events.
I've studied English grammar from elementary school through college. I then further enhanced the depth of my knowledge by taking an extensive grammar course as part of my Master's program in applied linguistics.
Being a history major, I have extensive experience with writing, and I was a tutor at the University of Illinois Chicago's writing center. During my time there, I helped students with different types of writing from expository reports to persuasive pieces that accompanied brainstorming for debates. As we went through the essays together, I made sure that the student would try to find trends in terms of what kind of errors they were making. Then I would be a guide to show them how to find the answer to their own problems.
I've helped students from Kindergarten to 6th grade learn how to read in South Korea. I'm a very advanced reader since I've been reading since I was two years old. Not only that, but having a double major in History and Spanish made me realize the importance of synthesizing the main ideas of passages when I was faced with immense reading assignments and term papers in both English and Spanish.
I've played soccer for over 20 years now and have played on teams from park district to college level intermurals. I also worked my way up from secretary to president of the indoor soccer club at my university.
I've formally studied Spanish from 7th grade through college where I graduated with a major in Spanish. I also studied abroad for a year in Barcelona, and I'm a certified Spanish-English translator. I have experience as a Spanish interpreter as well for Central and South American refugees.
I've always managed to be on the honor roll or dean's list throughout my academic career thanks to my study skills and organizational skills. From prioritizing to simply keeping a monthly planner, all of it contributed to my academic success. While I was a writing tutor, I emphasized that writing and studying has to happen in steps. Not only that, but relating the material to subjects the student was familiar with helped greatly.
