I have found that a person-centered approach to teaching and tutoring yields the best results. First, I identify the student's strengths and areas for improvement. Second, I work with the student and his/her parents to set realistic short-term and long-term goals. As we progress through the lessons, we will adjust those goals, as needed, according to the student's learning pace and individual achievements. Encouragement, enthusiasm, creativity, commitment, and positive reinforcement are key elements in helping a student to meet and exceed his/her educational goals and to build confidence in his/her own skills and abilities.
My expertise is in English Language Arts: grammar, spelling, punctuation; writing and composition; and reading comprehension. I have 5 years of experience in tutoring English Language Arts, basic math skills, study skills, and time management at the elementary and middle school levels. Also, for 5 additional years, I helped high school students and college students research and apply for scholarships, including those that required essays, and helped them write, proofread, and edit term papers and write resumes. During my senior year of college, I interned as a teaching assistant in the English Department. I taught a freshman English workshop in a group classroom setting and conducted weekly individual student conferences in conjunction with the English professor teaching the English 101 core curriculum requirement. I taught two sections of 15 students each, twice a week, and all 30 of my "at risk" students achieved passing grades in English 101.
