Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am a Colorado certified Special Education Generalist/Specialist ( MA ). I also have ADHD and have spent hours studying the body of evidence for ADD/ADHD. Through thorough investigation of this topic I have been able to harness my disability, using it as a strength as opposed to a disability. This intense research along with my MA in SPED has given me the ability to teach others with ADD/ADHD how to cope with and organize school work as well as work on appropriate social skills.

I believe in educating the whole child. In other words my objective is more than rote learning, it is about making connections to the real world. I include appropriate character development with real world connections with every lesson. Overall, I am trained to differentiate any lesson through scaffolding techniques, as well as rigorous assessment, making sure to present appropriate and leveled instruction.

Business

My name is Nancy S. and I have a duel BA in Psychology and Business as well as MBA in Technology Management. I have also owned my own marketing firm in Chicago. My career also includes 15 years in Corporate America. Currently I am a school teacher in Jefferson County. My teaching style is project based for the most part unless we need to drill down to very specific learning objectives.

Career Development

My name is Nancy S. C. and I have an MBA and 20 years' experience in corporate America. I started my career as a corporate recruiter where I worked with professionals to expand their careers and/ or consult on how to launch a new one. I taught letter and resume writing along with strategic job prospecting. From there I opened a successful marketing company in Chicago for eight years. When I returned to Denver, I went back to school for another master's degree in education and have been a teacher ever since. I am passionate about this subject and would love to show you how to launch or change your career.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified K-6 elementary teacher. I also have a Master's degree in Special Education. These credentials offer me the opportunity to use specific individualized instruction and assessment. I believe in educating the whole child by creating meaningful connections to the real world. This is done by connecting new knowledge to existing knowledge. Overall, I believe a child's elementary education is the most important learning a child will have in their lifetime. It is the foundation for which all learning is laid. I look forward to meeting your student to see if we have an academic fit. Nancy

English

I am a special education teacher who specializes in language arts. I am able to teach almost any student to read or read better than the level they are at. With reading comes writing and reading comprehension. I believe that each student is an individual with individual learning styles and needs. The reason I have been so successful is I strive to keep their learning relevant, interesting, and fun. The other reason for my success I can only thank the countless parents who have helped their student learn through living life. In other words, make every moment counts when it comes to well rounded education.

Phonics

This is a favorite of mine! Phonics are the foundation for language. I am a licensed Special Education teacher trained and certified in Wilson, Fundations and Lexia. These phonics programs are used routinely in the classroom for building your student's foundation for language. I will determine the method once I meet your student and we can determine a plan that uses your student's strengths to lift up areas of need. I look forward to talking with you. Call me if you want to talk some more. Nancy

Special Needs

I am a Colorado certified Special Education Generalist/Specialist ( MA ). I am also certified in Elementary Education. In addition to my certifications, I am highly qualified in: Social Science, Technology and Business Education (MBA). I believe in educating the whole child. In other words my objective is more than rote learning; it is about making connections to the real world. I include appropriate character development with real world connections with every lesson. Overall, I am trained to differentiate any lesson through scaffolding techniques, as well as rigorous assessment, making sure to present appropriate and leveled instruction.

Study Skills

Carefully developed study skills is how I managed to get a BA in Psychology and two Master's Degrees. Study skills are at the foundation of success in in high school and then your post secondary education. The big three things you need to know are: Always go to class, take impeccable notes and be able to organize your assignments and timelines. Those three things will allow you to organize your thoughts, notes and objectives into a well written paper or assignment.

Specifically, I can teach you how to organize your thoughts through strategic note taking such as the Cornell Method and Mind Maps and/or Spider diagrams. In addition to note taking, time management and test taking strategies are all critical in developing good study skills.

It may sound simple, but good study skills have to be practiced and developed into a personal routine that results in academic success.

Writing

Reading and Writing are skills that develop and dovetail simultaneously to produce good language acquisition skills. Once you learn the basic writing skills the next step is to practice. Having been through graduate school twice with two Master's as well as a license in Special Education, I have had my fair share of practice when it comes to writing. The key is to learn to write something you care about. When teaching others to write I will purposefully select a topic of interest to a student. From there we learn how to take a topic that is not of interest and find some aspect that is in some way compelling. The most important thing is to make sure a student can find success when they make the attempts. This is where one on one learning can really make a difference. Writing is difficult for some students to learn. Much of the problem is self confidence. This is something that can be worked through with instruction, success and strong support from home.

Summer means fun, no school, swimming pools and a number of other things that do not include school work.  So it is  important to create a routine for learning  you could name something like " The Summer Fun Club".   See if you can find a couple of neighborhood kids who might want to join in the fun.  It is important you schedule 30 minutes every day for fun... read more

Highly recommended! — My son was diagnosed with ADHD years ago, and has struggled through school his entire life. Between testing, homework, and everyday classroom activities, my son's confidence and self-esteem was extremely low. Nancy has been one of the best motivators I have ever seen work with him. She is very quick at bringing a child's strengths out, and has the unique ability to instill the confidence in my son ...
