I am a qualified tutor because I recently graduated from University of Chicago in philosophy and am eager to translate lofty ideas into digestible, everyday language. For thousands of hours, I have helped dozens of students improve their grades, test scores, study habits and confidence.
As a tutor with Stanford's Phoenix Scholars and the YMCA, I helped socio-economically underrepresented students with homework, study skills, and the enigma of college admissions. Moreover, I have worked both with big tutoring companies, learning their expensive secrets, and independently, so that I have the freedom to teach at the pace of each student--not a curriculum. Over the last year, I have primarily tutored high school and college students, helping them prepare for tests like the SAT and GRE, to select and apply to colleges and to build the study skills and confidence to eventually continue to succeed without a tutor.
I am patient and hope to serve as a mentor for the small number of individuals I tutor. My relationships with the students go beyond the formality of the classroom because I take the time to meet students' families and attend students' events (e.g., sports games and music recitals). My efforts also pay off in the classroom, however, because students feel more comfortable with me and because I am able to recast lessons and key concepts in terms more closely connected to the interests and language of the students.
My academic strengths include reading comprehension, writing and history. I am also comfortable tutoring some science and math (e.g., algebra, geometry, pre-calculus and calculus). I have tutored the SAT, GRE and GMAT. I am confident I can be a good tutor because I am sincerely committed to and believe in education. I look forward to bringing the skills which made me a successful student to the chalkboard, sharing them with my students while I continue to learn as well.
