After teaching Microbiology and other Biology courses in local community colleges for 10 years, I realized that my true love is working one-on-one with students rather than in a classroom setting. This allows me to observe the individual student's learning style and tailor my teaching accordingly. I call myself a geek because I have so much passion for science and math. In fact, many of my students have called my enthusiasm infectious! I have both my undergraduate (Geography, 1993) and graduate (Microbiology, 2001) degrees from UC Berkeley, where I graduated Phi Beta Kappa. I have over 17 years experience tutoring middle school, high school and college students in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, and all levels of math up to calculus. I am also skilled in teaching students organizational and study skills for scholastic success. I began tutoring SAT test prep for Ivy West, since bought by Sylvan Learning, in 1994; I have stayed abreast of changes in the exam and do still help students prepare for the test.

Even though I am older, I have a great rapport with my students, and we tend to have fun with our work. While I am a very patient tutor, I am also goal oriented so that the student makes measured progress. I am not the type of tutor that 'just gets the homework done'. Understanding concepts and then applying that understanding to solve problems is my objective for the student.

My main hobbies are international travel and SCUBA. The picture you see is me in a canoe in a remote park on the northern coast of Honduras - cocodrillos (crocodiles), monos (monkeys, specifically howler and spider), armadillos, snakes, and the elusive manatee ... ahh, paradise!

Tutoring is my full time job, so I am committed to my students for both their long-term and short-term needs.

Chemistry

Chemistry is a demanding subject and does require certain skills to master: attention to detail, solid algebra skills, conceptual understanding of complex ideas and application of these ideas to problem-solving. I have been tutoring students since I took the class (Chem 1A and 1B) in 1993, and I have had great success at helping students improve their understanding and their course grades. Explaining concepts in multiple ways, using analogies and props, and helping you determine what to focus on to problem-solve on exams are my greatest skills. I can't promise that I can help you enjoy chemistry, but if you put the effort in, I can assure you a better understanding!

Microbiology

I hold a Master's degree from UC Berkeley in Microbiology. I have also taught Microbiology 10 years in community college.

TEAS

I have worked with several students in the past year to help them prepare for the TEAS V, and each student has passed and been accepted to nursing school. The sooner you get started studying for the test after (or during!) your coursework, the better.

I have 19 years experience in test preparation (SAT math and English, ACT, GRE), so am skilled in teaching each section: reading, science, math, and English and language usage. Whether you need help in one, two, or more sections, I can help. I request that you take a practice test in the ATI book so that we can devise a study plan, and then devote as much time to homework as possible.

Outstanding tutor!!! Denise is a truly wonderful tutor. I am a returning student, who hadn't done any real math in 12 years and because of that I had developed somewhat of a "math phobia." With the help, support, and guidance of Denise I have been able to slowly gain confidence, bring back lost skills, and learn new ones. She has a patient and calming demeanor which I find to be very important when tackling a tough ta ...
