I have been playing guitar for over 20 years. I have a bachelor's in music from UCLA in Classical Guitar Performance, Masters in Music from CSULA in Commercial Music and Electric Guitar Performance/Jazz, and a Doctorate in Musical Arts from Claremont Graduate University in Classical Guitar Performance. I specialize in teaching the students of V.I.P.'s in both Orange County and Los Angeles.

I have been teaching classical guitar, electric guitar, and steel string guitar for the past 15 years. My lesson plan covers all styles from the 400 years of the classical era, to blues/jazz standards, to electric guitar classic rock and alternative rock hits. I focus on technique, musicianship, performance, and teach an enjoyment in the challenge and satisfaction of learning a new skill.

Music Theory

I passed music theory at UCLA with all the other opera singers and guitar players. My professor was Dr. Paul Chihara and his T.A. Andy. They taught us the fundamentals. Ear Training

I had to study ear-training as part of my degree for my bachelors in music at UCLA. I use those two years of ear-training courses as the basis for my method and also add suggestions on what worked for me.

General Music

I have always been interested in music history and have made it a point to read as many biographies of musicians as I can find. I passed all my history classes at UCLA from each era, and then for my doctoral degree in Musical Arts at CGU I had to memorize all the historical information for the qualification exams. Guitar

I have successfully completed all my recitals for my bachelor's degree in music from UCLA (Junior and Senior recital). For my Master's in commercial music at CSULA. I had a full concert with 8-piece band that included violin, sax, mandolin, and keyboards as well as the traditional bass, drums, and guitars. I had to coordinate the entire concerts, learn the lead electric guitar and vocals for a one-hour show.

Music History

I have a doctoral degree in music and had to memorize all of the history of music for my qualification/exit exam. I spent an entire year studying for the history exam, completing my doctoral paper.

Sight Singing

I was a member of the UCLA Chorus for 6 quarters. I learned how to sight sing during this period and learned many techniques from the conductors. I am a bass/baritone but can also help out other vocal ranges. I can play just enough piano to hear the melody and work on exercises to perfect the accuracy of pitch.

Songwriting

I studied song writing and the many different forms with Professor Deborah Holland at Cal State Los Angeles in the Commercial Music Masters Program. Basically there are around 20-30 different pop song writing forms. Such as AAA (Jimi Hendrix, Watchtower) to AABA (McCartney/Lennon's song, "Secret") and many other forms.
We will review and compose our own songs in each form in order to really feel what each progression does to the audience and lyrical message.

$60 per hour studio/office. $30 for half hour lesson (recommended age 10 and under). Group rates available. I can come to your home but will have to charge you for travel and gas.
