About
Rebecca: |
As a child, I had a love of mathematics that I could never explain. Every time I learned something new, or completed a problem, I felt like I had solved another mystery. I enjoyed the feeling of using logic to find the "right answer".
I kept this feeling right until Calculus in high school, which confused me to no end. I understood bits and pieces with clarity, but could not grasp others.
It wasn't until Calculus I at George Mason University that I understood my underlying problem. Calculus made perfect sense... provided I used logic to get there. Up until that time, rote memorization of formulae had been the emphasis. No wonder I had no idea what I was doing!
After my epiphany, I rediscovered my love for all things mathematical, and quickly completed every math course required for my Computer Science degree. When I have the chance to return to school, I will add either a Math minor, or major, to my studies.
This is what I hope to bring to our tutoring sessions. I don't want my student to feel lost in a sea of formulas. I want my student to understand the reasons behind the mathematics; I want my student to use logic, built on a solid foundation of understanding, to complete each problem.
In order to build this foundation and logical ability, I will work to find each student's best learning method. Rather than preach at a student, I will work with the student to the best of both of our abilities. |
