About
Janet: |
My greatest joy in life is helping another person to learn a skill or gain insight into a concept, a theory, or to merely appreciate something they had not understood fully. The most fun I have is helping someone get it.
The best satisfaction in the world is to see a student use the skills I taught them for their own satisfaction. I love innovating my teaching methods to help you achieve this satisfaction. When helping you along, I will often use what you know to get you to your new goals, or give you tricks to remember what you learned when you have to use it.
I'll combine this method with a strong formal strategy for teaching any student the skills they want to gain or improve. I usually come to a session with a lesson plan in mind, and a set of strategies to handle what was not planned ahead of time.
For instance, we may have planned to learn the basic parts of a paragraph during one lesson, and you may come to the table with a poem you have to read for a class. I'll combine the lesson, at that point, to include both structures so that we don't lose time -- and so your goals are met in both cases. I may also use a recent experience you've had to help you see into both.
I have over 13 years of teaching experience in various settings, all of which have helped me to develop this style. I've found that I need to be able to teach no matter what position I've taken, as well, and I've found that I'm a very effective teacher.
Thus, although my formal education is only demonstrated in English (writing and literature), Theatre, Philosophy and Law (I'm certified as a Legal Assistant), my experience is quite diverse. This gives me plenty of material to develop plans for teaching anyone of varying backgrounds.
Also, I am always eager to learn new things myself. That means I am very sensitive to the awkwardness one feels when learning something new, especially when the thing you want to learn is very important to your success in life.
Finally, I love my students like I love my family and friends. I am therefore totally dedicated to assuring that you achieve your goals! |

Janet's Experience:
grammar
|
My experience in grammar use and teaching is extensively demonstrated. Not only are my educational degrees all reliant upon English language usage, I have been published frequently, for payment. I also held positions for many years, with positive reviews (I got raises in pay), where proofreading and editing were the most important skills I was paid to do. Knowing grammar was and is essential to editing and proofreading any work I write, review or edit.
Conversationally, I've also got extensive grammar experience -- both from the English side of things, and from how people of other languages see English grammar. I have quite a few family members and long time personal friends from other countries. I've been married for 15 years to a man from an area of the country where the grammar is quite distinct from that which is used most everywhere else. I frequently visit foreign countries (to visit family) and therefore have a keen idea of how several other languages' grammars differ from American and British English.
In addition, my mother and my grandmother were schoolteachers, and I've been raised in a family where using appropriate grammar is not just a nice thing to do, it is insisted upon. Moreover, we made it a game to discover ways in which grammar rules don't work when one is in the flow of chat.
Therefore, my background in grammatical understanding and in teaching it is not merely via education, but is part of my muscle and bone, and I must use it daily to communicate with most of my daily contacts. If you have a grammar question or are engaging in a grammatical usage that outside the norm, I will not only have the answer but will have several options for solving your particular problem, or series of problems.

study skills
|
I'd like to be allowed to teach study skills; because, of course, one can't really teach anything without doing so.
My basic method for teaching study skills is to:
1. Insist upon setting deadlines for both short term and long term goals.
2. Break down all homework into bits that can be managed as short term goals.
3. Discover if a student has any other companions or fellow students with whom they might study, and then ask them to put those study times into a calendar.
4. Set up a calendar for a student to follow on his or her own.
5. Place short term goals (towards the final goal of getting a project completed) into the calendar.
6. Place the long term goal into the calendar, too.
7. Set up an outline for the full picture of what goals are being reached.
8. Set up positive reinforcement rewards (personal rewards, not something I'd give my students) in the calendar too.
9. Give my student my number in case they have any questions.
10. Look at any outstanding items each week and get them done before beginning the next week's goals.
11. Readjust the calendar if personal tasks outside the ultimate goal must be handled.
12. Make sure at least two short-term goals are accomplished at each meeting between me and the student.

theatre
|
In the area of theatrical tutoring, I am capable of the following types of learning.
1. I can teach a person how to organize tasks for completing technical theatre requirements
2. I can teach a person how to read and interpret a text or script.
3. I can bring a lot of historical background to any session that involves a certain play.
4. I can teach elocution (how to use your voice to bring out character, to speak clearly and plainly over distances, how to find ways to learn a dialect).
5. I can teach how to use makeup or costume for effect.
6. I can teach some singing technique (think muscial comedy or mere song -- not opera).
7. I can teach some strengthening technique for things like performance art (when the artist requires a lot of strength to get through prolonged still holds).
Thus, while I can't teach full spectrum theatre arts, I can teach a few useful things to the aspiring theatrical performer.
