 About Molly:
Hi! If you are looking for tutoring in the subjects of Music or Japanese, I have the experience to help. I majored in Asian studies and Music (composition) at Amherst College, speak fluent Japanese, sing, play flute, guitar and piano - all subjects I have experience teaching in a one-on-one environment. I just finished my master's degree in Ethnomusicololgy at UC Berkeley, and at Berkeley have taught college-level classes in world music, western music, theory and sight-singing. I could tutor in any of these subjects, as well as help with instrumental instruction. I lived in Japan for a little over 4 years, attended a Japanese school, and am therefore familiar with the challenges this language presents to English speakers. I have experience tutoring Japanese at the junior-high level, but would be comfortable at any level. I believe I have an engaging teaching style, and work with the assumption that humor and a willingness to guide students through to their path of understanding is the best way for them to learn. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you or your students need help in any of the above subjects - thanks!

Learn More About Molly's Experience:
flute
I have been playing flute for over 15 years, mostly working with classical repertoire. I have performed with classical groups as well as an improv-based rock group in San Francisco. I have experience giving one-on-one flute instruction, and could teach beginning to intermediate flute players. I am very familiar with flute repertoire, and have several books from which we could choose potential pieces.
general music
I have been studying music since I was in elementary school, have a BA in music composition, and and MA in ethnomusicology. I have experience teaching music theory, Western music history and sight-singing and world music at the college level. Whether students need help in understanding music analysis, need to work on improving their listening skills, or just need help in singing what they see on the page - I have experience in all these areas. I can teach through voice, piano, guitar, or flute, depending on the interest of the student.
guitar
I have been playing guitar for about 5 years, and would be able to teach chord formations, finger-picking, reading tablature, strumming rhythms, and barre chords. My experience has been with pop/folk/rock genres - so if students are interested in learning how to play their favorite songs, I would be able to lead them through that process.
Japanese
Having lived in Japan for four years, attended Japanese elementary and junior high school, and taken Japanese courses through college, I consider myself a fluent speaker with a near-native accent. Since I had the benefit of an immersion learning experience at first, followed by intensive coursework, I could teach students with all types of experience with Japanese. I could help students work through assignments for any level of Japanese class, get interested students started from scratch, whether their interest is academic, or simply wanting to understand their favorite manga.
music history
I have a BA in music, and have experience teaching a college-level history of Western music course. Depending on the particular interest of the student, I could help with general music history, working on listening/recognition of genres and particular composition styles, or focus on a particular genre/era to understand its specific characteristics. Anything from Gregorian chant to Philip Glass is fair game. I have a strong understanding of theory and could work through scores with students in order to strengthen their listening, and place the music within its historical context.
music theory
In completing my degree in composition, understanding music theory was a necessary skill. I can tutor subjects ranging from basic music-reading and major/minor tonality to chordal analysis and counterpoint. I could help with homework for existing theory classes, teach students how to hear and understand chord progressions in their everyday listening, or use theory as a means to create their own songs. I have experience teaching ear-training and sight-singing, and would be able to tutor theory through practice, on the instrument of the student's choice, or on piano.
sight singing
In teaching sight-singing at the college level, I have taught students with no experience reading music to sing a line of music with a few minutes of preparation. Topics I covered included basics such as key signatures and clefs, recognizing scale degrees, and interval recognition to major/minor tonality and all forms of minor scales. Other topics included basic theory concepts such as major and minor triads, singing the various forms of diminished, augmented and seventh chords, and dictation. All concepts were taught interactively through singing exercises, with the final goal of accurately singing a musical selection. Depending on interest, we could also work on harmony, singing duets, or rounds.
