About Vinaya:

During my Ph.D. in Biology, I gained extensive experience (~5 years) in teaching lectures and labs in Anatomy & Physiology and General Biology to undergraduate students. I want to help you achieve your study goals by deriving benefit from my knowledge and experience. Additionally, I can also tutor students seeking to gain a better understanding of concepts in complex subjects such as Cell Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Immunology, Microbiology, Endocrinology, and Molecular Biology. Applying the theoretical and practical knowledge gained during my Ph.D., I will make every effort to make your learning easier and enriching at the same time. I have also tutored middle school and high school students in Science for 5 years during my Bachelors/Masters and I am available to tutor in the same. I believe a teacher can make or break a student’s interest in a field and so, I want to work with you/your child to make learning a fun experience. It is vital to have basic knowledge of general computer applications in today's world. I am well versed in Microsoft Word and can teach you tricks to exploit the full potential of this wonderful application. My students have been from diverse backgrounds: pre-med, pre-allied health, other majors, and diff age groups - school students, traditional and non-traditional university students. Hence, I have experience in tailoring my teaching materials and style depending on my student's requirements and background. I will help break complex information into much simpler basics for better understanding.

More On Vinaya's Subjects:

  • anatomy

I have taught Human Anatomy to undergraduate Biology and other majors as both lectures and labs. To teach the lectures, I transformed the lecture material from traditional over-head projectors to PowerPoint slides to enhance the learning experience of my students. I also posted the slides online for convenient, any-time access to lecture material. I strive to provide all the resources for a fulfilling learning experience. Using PowerPoint slides for images of cells, organs and body systems and animation of processes, I provided students with visual aids for better comprehension. I have aided my students understand the fundamental units of structure in different organ systems in the body such as the Digestive system, Circulatory system, Nervous system, Musculoskeletal system etc. Further, using real specimen, skeleton models, plastic organ/body system models and cat dissections in lab, I have helped students gain a better feel for the details of the anatomical structures in human body, their orientations and relative arrangement within the body. It is more fun to learn things when it is relevant to us. Therefore, I always try to encourage my student’s learning of Anatomy by relating the subject matter to a well-known disease or common condition. This provides the basis for more interest in the subject and best grasp of the complex anatomical structures. As the medical terms are complex to remember and spell, I emphasize the use of pnemonics and help them break down lengthy/complex terms into appropriate shorter pieces for easier learning and memorization.

  • physiology

Teaching Physiology in parallel to Anatomy proved useful to both me and my students. As Physiology deals with the functions of the different body systems which strive to maintain homeostasis in our body, it was important to have the anatomical framework in mind while understanding the underlying functions of the different cells, organs and tissues. In physiology, I elaborated on different processes in the body such as 1) the digestion/metabolism of food to generate energy and basic building blocks, 2) fluid/mineral balance and its impact on excretion, bone structure, blood composition, muscle contraction, 3) hormonal influences on different systems etc. I adapt my teaching style based on individual student’s learning ability and use figures, flow charts etc. to help students develop an overall understanding of the subjects and help them outline the key points to remember.
