About Jennifer:

On the verge of graduating from Rice University with a Music Performance major, I've enjoyed playing the piano, and learning music theory, and music history for over 12 years. A recent prize winner of a Young Artists competition and many other local and state competitions, I am experienced in the classical music industry. At the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, I took the graduate level of piano pedagogy at Rice University. I have over 5 years experience teaching all ages and levels, and hope to share my knowledge with my students. I have also accompanied instrumentalists and vocalists; have assisted my preparatory instructor in teaching at a conservatory of music in piano and music theory; and have completed all collegiate music requirements for my Bachelor of Music degree. I won the distinction award in the Certificate of Merit exam for music theory and was accepted into the National Convention for piano. I accompanied and prepared students for the Certificate of Merit piano and theory exam. In addition, I have learned German for over 5 years, received the National German Award on the AATG exam, and placed out of 2 college-level years of German study through the AP German exam.I look forward to sharing what I've learned and experienced to anyone who wants to learn!! I like to explore different modes of learning and cater to the likes of each student. I recently was the main piano teacher at a summer music camp in charge of other instructors in California and also taught music theory as well as chamber music and music appreciation. I teach all levels, preferably intermediate and advanced beginner, and love helping others enjoy music as much as I enjoy it. I have taught ages from 5 to 50, many of whom started as beginners with me, so don't be discouraged if you're within or slightly outside that range!!I also have years of experience with violin, orchestral experience and repertoire that is further expanded upon in the violin section.

More On Jennifer's Subjects:

  • ear training

I'm currently an upperclassman at Rice University working towards a BM in Piano Performance. Having learned piano for over 12 years, violin for 4 years, music theory for 10 years, I've completed college level ear training, college level music history, college level music theory, and graduate level piano pedagogy. I believe I bring a diverse approach to music learning. I have completed and graduated with honors from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Preparatory Musicianship Program for ear training, piano, composition, and chamber music. During that time, I also received the highest mark on the AP Music Theory test for both the written and listening parts. Afterwards, I also completed all aural training courses at Rice University to satisfy the Bachelor of Music requirements and received the highest scores in each class. I cater to the needs of my students purely on an individualized basis. I was an assistant piano and chamber music instructor at a music summer program in California for children up to teenagers. Music learning and appreciation were important aspects of the camp, but there were also various levels of student knowledge in piano, music theory, music history, music appreciation, and chamber music experience, a situation that I am comfortable with. I'm comfortable tutoring all levels. If you want to have fun and learn to enjoy music and understand the analysis and backbone of the music score itself, I'll be available to train you to listen to the music's structure, progressions, harmonies, and more!

  • violin

I have a strong background in playing violin in an orchestra collaboratively and playing in chamber ensembles as an equal member. I was concertmistress of Lowell High School's Symphonic Orchestra, the highest level group, where I gained experience leading over a hundred members. I was first violinist of the Golden Gate Philharmonic where I participated in weekly string quartet coaching. As a first violinist, I performed with the Villa Sinfonia Chamber Orchestra in Carnegie Hall as part of the Concert Series in New York. More recently, as an instructor at a performing arts camp in California, I assisted the high school orchestra as a first violinist in concerts. This entire summer I look forward to teaching violin group classes in a summer camp for children.
