About Donna:

My highest motivation for being a teacher is a desire to help others. My most important goal is to draw out the potential of each student. I want students to develop confidence in their abilities and to be willing to try new things. I include hands on learning activities, goal setting, and self-evaluation. In ESL, I use tasks found in the workplace or at home, art, songs, games, and numbers to teach language. In the past, I have helped adult students read a map, look for work, use a computer, and prepare for a citizenship interview and test. I include listening, speaking, reading, and writing in my lessons. If someone just needs to learn how to go to the grocery store, I would love to help.

I am certified as an ESL (English-as-a-Second-Language) Teacher in Illinois for grades K-12 and I have tutored adult students. I hold a Bachelors Degree in education from Northeastern Illinois University. I have two years of teacher aide experience as well as two years of experience as a teacher. My students have been from Albania, Mexico, Peru, Romania, Ukraine, Russia, Poland, Belarus, Lithuania, Myanmar, India, Pakistan, Jordan, and Palestine. I love meeting new people and learning about their cultures.

I hold a Bachelors Degree in education from Northeastern Illinois University. I have two years of teacher aide experience as well as two years of experience as a teacher. My students have been from Albania, Mexico, Peru, Romania, Ukraine, Russia, Poland, Belarus, Lithuania, Serbia, Myanmar, India, Pakistan, Jordan, and Palestine. I love meeting new people and learning about their cultures. I believe in making learning fun. I use art, songs, games, and numbers to teach language. We learn through our senses, and I try to include hands-on learning experiences. I relate English lessons to the student’s life. If we need to practice making telephone calls, or contact a child’s school, that is what we do. Including student goal setting, self-evaluation, and choices in assignments are ways of addressing student needs. I start at the student's level and make use of student strengths to build a good foundation.

When my students finish school, I want them to be productive members of society. I want them to enjoy, and be good at, what they do. They should be lifelong learners, and have interests outside of work. Various studies have identified the skills that employers need in employees. These skills are: basic academic skills in reading, writing and computation; good communication skills, including listening and speaking; the ability to work in groups with persons of various backgrounds; creative thinking and problem solving; and the ability to use personal computers to carry out simple tasks such as word processing. I have tutored children in a public school setting and adults in a factory setting. We worked on basic academic skills, preparing for the U.S. Constitution test, and using a computer. The key to learning all of these subjects is using your mind to solve problems. You may not have done well in school because you were bored so you need to find the connections between academics and your real life. We will work on setting goals as well as passing the test.
