I am a native Finnish speaker with a Master's degree in English, specializing in literature. In Finland I gained teaching experience from both ESL and Finnish as a Second Language at a university level. Currently I teach Finnish in the Seattle area, with my students ranging from small children to adults who are participating in continuing education.
Although books are a marvelous tool as a support for language learning, I prefer to teach through games and real-life simulations, especially when it comes to learning phrases and vocabulary. Grammar, too, can be made interesting if the teacher looks beyond the usual cloze exercises!
My ESL classes have received positive student and colleague feedback for this approach. When it comes to private tutoring, I take the time during the first session to find out the specific needs of the student and the areas he or she finds interesting: learning becomes suddenly easier when the language rules are applied to an area which already interest the student, whether it be pop song lyrics, computer games or 19th century British novels!
I have lived in a in a different culture from my own (Germany, and now the United States). Also, I have worked with immigrants in Finland. I have learned how important it is for a teacher to be able to relate to the difficulty of mastering a language that is dominant in the area where you live: if you are an ESL learner in the Seattle area, I know how you feel!

English is my second language: I have learned it since 3rd grade in grade school, and recently I was awarded my M.A. in English, with a specialization field in literature.
In addition to these extensive studies in English, I have taught English for Special Purposes for Finnish college students (which roughly translates to ESL + vocabulary of a specific field of study). Also, I have held sessions in an ESL immersion program for children aged 6-8.
I speak and write English fluently, and my non-native speaker background supports my ESL teaching superbly as I am well aware of the difficulties learners often face when dealing with a second language.
