About
Amanda: |
|
Hi! I am a college student who enjoys working with others to expand their understanding of my favorite subjects. As a high school senior I tutored sophomores and I loved the hands on experience. I have been in AP and honors classes throughout high school. I have a younger brother in middle school who I often help with projects and homework. My mom is an elementary school teacher, and she regularly asks for my help and input on her projects and assignments.
I also have been working with the YMCA as a camp counselor during the summer for 3 years, which has provided me with the opportunity to learn with children of all ages.
My favorite subjects are English, math, and all kinds of history.
I am also very familiar with the Los Altos school systems! |

Several years ago, when my mother was working towards her teaching credential, she had to take the CBEST. She and I went through the several test prep books, which cover material from kindergarten through middle school. Helping her prepare for thses exams reinforced everything that I learned throughout elementary school. Today, she often has me come into her classroom to work with children who are falling behind in many different subjects.
In addition I have a younger brother who has just begun middle school. While in elementary school he struggled greatly with many different subjects. I have often sat with him and coached him on his homework or helped him study for tests. Because I went through the same school system as he did, it was easier for us to communicate about the lessons as well as relate them to outside things.
I am very comfortable with all elementary subjects, and I enjoy helping others to become comfortable with them too.

proofreading
|
In high school I was always in the AP English classes. This meant that we often had long essays for homework, and it also meant that we spent a great deal of time peer-editing and proof reading papers in and out of class. While proof reading I do not simply look at grammer and spelling; I look at the essay as a whole: is there a better way to organize this? is all of your research/facts present? do you prove your thesis in a logical way? what other areas could you explore that would add to this? I believe that a good paper shold read like a good book, you don't want to put it down, it keeps you engaged.
One of my professors recently told me that he was very impressed by my essay on early Christian symbolism in art. He said it was such a relief to read a paper that flowed from one idea to the next instead of just repeating what I had found in my research.

Student Reviews:
Great tutor, sharp, good listener, communicates ideas effectively
We're very happy with Amanda.
She's energetic and knows her subject matter very well.
We feel that Amanda is perfect for our 13 year old son. She both listens and communicates very effectively - a sometimes difficult task with teenage children!
Thank you Amanda!
