About
Dan: |
|
My number one goal is to help you succeed, PERIOD. I've been a teacher/tutor for over ten years, and I have a wide variety of experience, including primary, secondary, special education, ESL, gifted and talented (GT), college, and online/distance learning.
I like to think outside the box/textbook; I teach my students to think critically, and to use their own unique experiences and skills to solve problems. I believe firmly in learning across the curriculum: individual subjects (reading, math, science, etc.) don't exist in a vacuum! There's a huge arsenal of knowledge at our disposal; all we have to do is to be willing to use it! |

Dan's Experience:
ESL/ESOL
|
I have Texas ESL certification for early childhood through 12th grade. I've taught ESL for 7th and 8th grade, and I've served as lead 5th grade ESL teacher. I have also taught college-level ESL sections.
Most importantly, I've spent time in countries where I was not a native speaker (most notably, Spain). I had to constantly struggle with the language just to perform very minor tasks, and I also had to learn to deal with factors that go beyond a simple vocabulary, such as culture shock and isolation. I feel that my experiences overseas have made me a better ESL teacher because I've faced many of the same challenges that non-native English speakers in this country do. The best education comes from living!
