About Michael:

I am a master musician with over 25 years of experience in music education. My compositions are included in the catalogs of major music publishing houses. As an organ recitalist, I have been heard thoughout the east coast of the United States. I enjoy guiding my students through the world of musical exploration while promoting the needs of the whole person.

I have taught all aspects of music theory and composition and would include this training, adjusted appropriately for all age groups, as part of piano instruction. I would offer instruction in classic organ playing for those with strong piano backgrounds.

I am excited about the opportunity to prepare juniors and seniors in high school who are applying to college as music majors for college entrance auditions and music theory/history pre-tests.

More On Michael's Subjects:

  • composition (music)

My undergraduate major was in Music Theory and Composition. I studied through a rigorous program of theory practice, counterpoint, canon and fugue, orchestration and advanced composition. I have continued to compose at an agressive pace and rewrite and self-critique my work. My compositions are published by known music publishers.

  • ear training

Ear training was an integral part of my study in music. Being able to hear harmonic and melodic neuances in the music of others contributes greatly to one's own ability to express and create. My own ventures in imrovisation would not be possible without strong aquired listening skills. Passing this skill on is a paramount part of my teaching style.

  • general music

After teaching for many years in classroom settings, I have developed a multitude of lessons, hands on experiences and web enhanced techniqies to aid in the understanding of general topics regarding movement, music notation, counting and reading, composers and audio examples of styles and periods of western music history.

  • music history

The History of Western Music is an intriguing and engrossing subject. I believe that it important to take students on a sort of virtual tour back through time to discover the development of music via the social, political and geographical events of each period from the Roman Empire to the present era. This method also explores the lifes and music of the greats such as Palestrina, Pachelbel, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven etc.

  • music theory

Music Theory is at the root of true understanding of all music. the foundational "rules" of voice leading and harmony are at the source of understanding all musical styles including the development of Jazz and Rhythm 'n Blues. All musical styles from the traditional to the popular are built upon these age old principals.

  • piano

When the Pianoforte came into being in the middle of the 18th century, it revolutionized the world of music. Never before had a keyboardist been able to perform on a single instrument that offered capabilities of instant and personal expression. The piano's predecessors the Harpsichord and Organ could only make instantaneous dynamic changes between soft and loud. The piano gave music a new depth of expression which had been previously impossible. It is the best way to teach students to use two hands in a wide range of notes from the bass through the treble clef staffs.

  • sight singing

Singing at sight is most often taught through methods in so called solgfeggio or Do, Re, Mi, etc. This gives the teacher a proven method to assist students in seeing the relationship of printed notes with their actual sound or tonality. sight singing, once mastered leads one to an irrevocable gift. This gift leads to many opportunities in musical performance, not the least of which is singing with professional groups in real harmony.

  • songwriting

Everyone wants to know how to make reality out of musical ideas. You may have a set of words the you can sing something to, but don't have the basic understanding of notation and theory to write it out on staff paper. Or, you have accomplished a deeper knowledge of harmony and can accompany yourself on the guitar. However, you need feedback or support from a caring teacher to smooth out phrases or assist you with options for melodic development. Songs are personal. They are often beautiful. Over time, the skills are instilled to make them solid and complete, maybe even ready to be received by a publisher.

  • voice (music)

The human voice is the first instrument. You bring it with you wherever you go. With training in listening, breath control, expression and vowel pronunciation, you are able to continually sound better. This is true wether you sing with a good choral ensemble or simply want to sing solos in concert or in church services.
