About Maria:

I am a native Spanish speaking U.S. Citizen. I was born in Wisconsin and grew up in Colombia (South America) attending an American private school 1st to 12th grades. I have very good command of both languages. I have a bachelors degree in Architecture from Cornell University (5-year program) and have practiced my career for many years. I have traveled to many parts of the world including Colombia, Panama, Nicaragua, Honduras, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Spain, Italy, France, Greece, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, The Philippines, India, Hong Kong, Japan, and several US states.

Currently I have taken time off from my career to raise my children. Tutoring affords me a more flexible schedule, allowing me to raise my kids. In addition to my tutoring experience, I teach Spanish to my children and support them in their school academic needs, on a daily basis.

I am able to tutor many subjects in English and/or Spanish, to students of any age.

More On Maria's Subjects:

  • elementary (k-6th)

Besides having tutored children of different ages, I have 3 children of my own, two of which have already finished elementary school. I feel very comfortable teaching children. I know that the way children learn needs to be fun in order to keep their attention and focus on the learning material. Additionally, repetition in a variety of ways will help retain the material at hand. The elementary years are the foundation of learning. It is very important for this foundation to be solid so that the next thing to be learned makes full sence. Therefore, I believe the elementary school material is probably the most important material a person needs to learn well. I can help children make their foundation solid.

  • ESL/ESOL

I am a bilingual US Citizen. I grew up in Colombia, South America, where Spanish is the primary language. During that time, I attended an american private school 1st-12th grade. Consequently, I grew up speaking, practicing and studying both languages. I tutored ESL during my 11th and 12th grade. I have visited many countries where Spanish or English is spoken and have never needed a translation, but instead have translated for others. During my college years at UM and Cornell University, I was given credit for AP Spanish courses (Exempt from class)due to my knowledge of the language. I have a good command of both languages and feel that I would be able to teach any subject in both languages. I can definitely teach/tutor ESL.

  • general computer

I have a lot of experience with computers. I have used lots of programs: MS Word, MS Excel, Word Perfect, several of the Adobe products, AutoCAD, and others. I utilize the internet on a daily basis. Responsabilities of my previous job included the the role of Systems Director in charge of the network and computer systems of a mid-size architecture firm. When I started working at that company, there were no computers. I helped introduce computers to the office while being one of the first ones to use them, train employees, set stardards, etc. I help implement email, back-up systems, purchase of equipment and software, etc. I feel very comfortable with computers and can teach others about them.
