About
Stacie: |
|
Hello! I am a recent college graduate (with honors), a ZooGuide at the Oregon Zoo, and an experienced and fun tutor! I have a B.S. in Wildlife Care and Education from Unity College and an A.A. in Environmental Studies/Natural Resources. I scored very well on the GRE and can't wait to start working on my masters degree in Conservation Biology. My work history includes being a college writing and science tutor, a veterinary assistant, an adoption counselor for a humane society, a dairy farm herd manager and an exotic animal husbandry intern. My tutoring specialties are research papers/projects, writing skills, and the life sciences (biology, ecology, zoology, etc.). I prioritize establishing goals, getting organized, making connections, patience and fun! |

GED
|
As someone who took the GED before going on to college and graduating with honors, I feel that I have both an experiential and academic advantage in tutoring others in GED preparation. I recently took the GRE General and Subject tests, so I also have the format of these standardizedtests fresh in mind. My own scores have been very high in all sections of these exams, including writing, science and math. The tutor student I am currently working with has gone from C's to A's in her writing assignments as a testament to her hard work combined with my tutoring guidance.
I am aware that many students preparing to take the GED may have had extraordinary circumstances in thier lives, leading to the inability to obtain a high school diploma. I have had similar circumstances in my own life, and am very understanding of the commitment and frustrations often involved in getting back into that academic mindset. I feel I could confidently and competently tutor both youth and adults to prepare for their GED tests and overcome those frustrations.

study skills
|
As a peer tutor at Americas Environmental College (Unity College, Maine), I discovered that not everyone absorbs information the same way, and not everyone feels the intrinsic value of learning right away...but the first step in achieving our goals is getting organized! I assisted students in creating timetables, checklists, outlines, portfolios and research schedules to bring them from chaos to control over their college careers!
My college coursework in Instruction and Evaluation Design, Teaching Science in the Secondary Schools, Research Methods and Design, Interpretive Methods, Psychology, and Intercultural Communication have all provided me with the experience to be an effective tutor of study skills. I received A's in all of these courses and graduated with honors. Beyond helping students get organized, I will strive for the ultimate study skill of meaningful learning accomplished through analogies, concept maps, models, images, and discovering the intrinsic rewards of finally "getting it". My study skills tutoring strengths are grades 7 - college senior. I am currently using my study skills to prepare for the GRE Subject Test in Biology!
