About Sara:

You, the student, are the most important element in the tutoring equation. I take my cues from my students. For some, the major barrier to learning is just lack of confidence and performance anxiety. Others face cultural pressures in a field, such as female engineers. Students can even require a refresher course in background knowledge to advance to higher levels. I am very flexible in my assessment and curriculum choices, so I tailor each situation to the individual. I use creative and interdisciplinary approaches, fusing areas of the student's expertise with new areas to explore.
I have experience tutoring a broad age group, from preschool students on cutting with scissors to 65 year old women in marketing and graphic design. Most commonly, I've encouraged high school and college students to pass general education classes, improve SAT scores, write entrance essays, or manage their time and study skills. One of my strengths lies in my ability to gauge expectations and set realistic goals from both the student's and the teacher's perspective.
This flexibility and confidence was honed during my years of education. I was named Valedictorian in high school, and continued to college with a prestigious Regents Scholarship from the University of California. I graduated with Highest Honors in the Literature Major. However, I'm also a balanced right brain/left brain thinker and pursued a Minor Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics, focusing on theory. Since college, my employment includes such diverse fields as video and film production, art gallery installation and representation, technical writing, research, and graphic design. I have continued taking classes in art history, accounting, and cultural anthropology, to name a few. I believe my endless curiosity helps fuel my drive for helping others to succeed at their dreams.
Finally, I am particularly sensitive and aware of cultural uniqueness and diverse methods of communication with the families in San Gabriel Valley. Currently, I enjoy teaching kindergartners about their own cultural value as Asian Americans, African Americans, and Latinos. I feel privileged to live in a neighborhood with people from Mexico, East Africa, China, Spain, Korea, the Phillipines, and Taiwan.

More On Sara's Subjects:

  • video production

I first became involved with video production while employed with an independent artist, an MFA in multimedia animation from UC Irvine. This Korean American artist continued to produce digital video projects, computer-based animation, and super-8 films in Los Angeles. Some of my responsibilities included preproduction tasks such as screenplay input, casting assistance, props, costumes, set design, and location scouting. During shooting, I helped with lighting, costumes, make-up, and cinematography/camera work. Probably, my most important role came during post-production, where I helmed design, packaging, grant applications, film festival submissions, and low-budget distribution. Additionally, I did some work in Flash (for animation) and video editing. Her films have been screened internationally and she has won various grants and fellowships. Motivated by this rewarding work, I took several classes in Video Production and film history at the renowned (and under-appreciated) Film and Television Department at LACC. Here, I produced several of my own short films, incorporating animation and dream-like designs. Afterwards, I continued making films, including music videos, and my films were screened in New York, Russia, and London. Interested in how video can be taught to young people, I introduced video production to two young children I was teaching through homeschooling. We learned about storyboarding, the camera, acting, dialog, multiple takes from different angles, non-linear editing, and titles. We completed a collaborative seven minute video about pirates in 2005. They were enthusiastic and creative learners, gaining experience with holding a camera, editing, and sound and music. I strongly believe that since video is relevant, simple, low cost, and flexible, it remains an important medium for children and young adults to express themselves. Especially living in Los Angeles, it is also a lucrative and local business attracting many recent graduates of high school and college.
