I am Conchita, Ed.D. a permanent resident in Quincy, MA . I received my doctoral degree from the Philippine Normal University, Manila, Philippines with major in Educational Administration. This University, the State University for Teacher Education was established by the Americans in 1901. It is worthy to note that my country, the Philippines was once a colony of the United States for about 48 years (1898-1946).And the public school system in my country has been patterned after the United States. English is our second language and the professional language in the school system. Eighty percent (80%) of the subjects are taught in English. Science is purely taught in English.
I am a retired public school educator, having served the Department of Education, Philippines for about 40 years. I opted for an optional retirement so that I could join my husband who is also a permanent resident in MA.
As a public school educator, I was a science teacher for 27 years, and Education Supervisor of the Region for 13 years.
As science teacher I taught Integrated Science, Biology and Physics. As a science Head Teacher of the school, I organized the tutorial method of teaching those students who were found to encounter difficulties in learning the subject. I was one of the tutors.
As Education Supervisor of the Region, I also organized the tutorial way of helping the students demonstrating difficulties in learning the subject. This innovation helped the Region in gaining a better achievement level in science in the National Achievement Test and in the Third International Mathematics and Science Study
For me, a teacher is always a tutor. My stint as as a public school educator has given me the experience to be a tutor. In this context, I am certain I am a teacher and tutor at the same time.
