I hold a bachelor's degree from Lawrence University, one of the nation's leading liberal arts schools. I have been playing violin for 18 years, and continued my studies in music at Lawrence's Conservatory of Music. As my second major, I pursued English, and was employed by the university as a writing and grammar tutor for two years. I grew up speaking German and am completely fluent, and chose French as my college minor. I gained fluency in French after studying in Paris for a semester. Most recently, I have been employed as a literacy tutor in Minneapolis Public Schools and have been trained in elementary school reading instruction. I believe in a dialogue between tutor and student, with the student speaking and asking questions at least as much as the tutor instructs. It is through explaining or demonstrating a concept to another person that a student gains complete confidence in a subject. Therefore, I frequently ask my students to explain concepts in their own words after I have taught them, always encouraging them to ask questions. In general, I am a very laid-back and approachable tutor who gets real pleasure out of helping others reach their goals. |
