I have 12 years of experience teaching and tutoring students of all abilities and ages, including middle schoolers and high school and university students.
High school instructors often neglect study skills (i.e., efficient annotating, note-taking, and test-preparation) in their zealous focus on content. I have spent years perfecting more effective time-management strategies that prepare students for college-level work.
Test preparation and writing are two of my specialties. I tutor the verbal sections of virtually any standardized test and work with students on creative and analytical essays, college essays, and SAT/ACT essays.
As a verbal "coach," I give my clients the tools they need to achieve self-sufficiency. My main focus has been and will always be learning that is intensive, challenging, and tailored to particular needs.
An example of this customization involves exercises that go beyond those of standard texts and instructors. When a client experiences difficulty identifying quotes on an English test, I design exercises that test this skill. I often read the required text along with her so that we can better brainstorm, organize, and craft responses to writing assignments.
I continue to practice what I preach about learning as a never-ending but endlessly rewarding process. Having completed a B.S. in Architecture from the University of Virginia and an M.A. in English Literature from the University of Illinois, I am now finishing up secondary certification at North Park University and plan on pursuing another graduate degree in history or the humanities.
I believe that serious study of any subject should be fun. Friends and relatives of my clients seek me out because together we learners transform even the most daunting academic tasks into manageable and rewarding experiences.
