elementary (k-6th)
I am a certified New Jersey Elementary School Teacher. I received my certification in 2006. Currently I am employed at Galloway Community Charter School teaching third grade. Before third grade I taught kindergarten for three years. I also have experience tutoring students one on one in all grades kindergarten through fifth grade.
phonics
I have taught students phonics for every year I've been teaching. I am skilled in using the Dibels Reading Assessment which assesses student's abilities in phonics and fluency. I also have used the Scholastic Guided Reading program and the Reading A-Z program which both have a strong emphasis on the use of phonics.
In addition to my practical teaching experience I have also attended a number of professional development workshops on the use of phonics in the classroom.
study skills
As a third grade teacher, I am responsible for preparing my students to take the state NJ ASKIII. In doing this, I found it imperative that I teach them good study skills. I have read a number of articles and books about good study habits. I put that knowledge into practice and wrote lesson plans to teach my students how to effectively study for an exam.
I also have my students fill out a study guide checklist each night leading up to an exam. The checklist contains all of the good studying techniques I have taught them. They are to check off what techniques they used and how long they studied for. I then compare those checklists with their performance on the assessment to see how effective their studying was.
public speaking
I have received my undergraduate degree from Richard Stockton College of New Jersey in Communications. One aspect of the Communication degree is public speaking. I took the required public speaking course and passed with an A.
I have experience with writing speeches both persuasive and informative. I use the techniques I've learned to teach my students creative writing.
