Before there were computers as we know them today, I worked in the broadcast industry as a radio announcer. "Computers" of that day were largely, well, large contrivances that worked primarily from timers, tones and relays. I watched what has become known as the Personal Computer grow from a curiosity (one could purchase a DOS computer from Radio Shack)with a small screen that flashed green letters only, to what it has become today - ubiquitous and an almost indespensible engine of productivity.
In 1996, while working for a television station, I became acquainted with the Internet; the World Wide Web was in its infancy; the "dot com" bubble had just begun to form. For some strange reason, many of my co-workers began asking me computer questions; I thought it wise to begin studying them. I bought my own first computer in 1998 and proceeded to learn on my own how it works.
In 2003, I made the decision to enroll in an on-line university distance learning degree program offered by Kaplan University. I completed a Bachelor of Science in Management with an Information Technology concentration (BSMIT). This study includes computer systems (hardware and software) analysis and design, software engineering, network architecture and construction, ethics as applied to information technology, project management and technical communications (including business statistics, quantitative methods and technical writing.)
Upon conference of my BSMIT, I took a brief hiatus from my academic pursuits and taught in the local school system as an aide. In 2007, I embarked upon another distance learning venture with Capella University to complete the degree of Master of Science in Information Technology (MSIT). My undergrad studies had piqued my interest in how "systems" are built, how/why they work and how to communicate that process with everyday people who might think they "know nothing of computers," but must use them. Capella allows graduate students the privilege of designing a curriculum that fits their interests of study. Several core subjects are mandatory, such as Business Finance, Project Management, and Technical Writing. Specialized area of study included advanced software engineering, systems analysis and design, ethics as applied to information technology, network architecture design, implementation and maintenance and wireless applications. Capella confered upon me the degree of MSIT in March of 2009.
In both instances of study, I was expected to set my own hours for study and completion of each lesson module assigned. Studying in such a free-form environment demands tight focus upon accomplishing the task. Self-discipline, attention to detail, good organization skill and ability to multi-task are inherent in such an endeavor; even though having these attributes going into the course of study, these skills are sharpened considerably.
During and after my studies, I taught as I continue to do so. My students range in age from 16 to 79 years, male and female from all economic, family and work backgrounds. Presently, I teach basic and advanced computer skill in a program offered by the City of Shreveport.
