More On Shannon's Subjects

  • general music

Music has been a major part of my life for many years. I took five years of piano lessons and the required music classes in school. I continued to participate in band and choir through middle and high school. I played the trumpet in concert, marching, and the elite jazz band as first chair trumpet in my sophomore and junior years. I received "1s" and "2s" in solo competitions. In choir, I was a second soprano and was a member of the elite jazz choir and received "1s" and "2s" in solo competitions. Through these amazing experiences I learned how to read, write, and perform music. If you are having difficulty understanding these processes I hope my knowledge will prove useful.

  • theatre

I have been involved in theatre since the age of three. My involvement includes community theatre, high school drama, workshops (including Students Gifted and Talented in the Arts in Columbus Ohio), and college. Although I have yet to obtain my Bachelor's degree in Theatre Arts, I am only a few credit hours away and plan to finish at Ohio State University next year. I have participated in over fifteen to twenty productions, participated in Speech and Debate (or Forensics), been through three and a half years of rigorous training in college, and continue to study performance and its principles. The study of Theatre is really the study of life and psychology, so I make a point to keep myself informed and flexible. I have about a dozen books on Theatre (most of which I have read) and have studied and read many popular (or not so popular) plays. I know how to analyze a script and its characters as well as how to bring those discoveries to life on and (to some degree) behind the stage. Hopefully, this knowledge will prove useful to you.

  • drawing

I have been drawing and making art for sixteen years. My mother graduated from Kent State in Graphic Design and has passed much of her knowledge along to me. I have also personally attended Kent State in the Art Education program for an entire semester. While doing so, I learned many things about drawing in Drawing I and composition in 2-D Composition. Also, I took a Post Modern Storytelling class toward my Theatre degree that was based on a book, "In the Making," about post modern artists and their art. Post Modern Storytelling taught me so much about being and artist and making art that I incorporate what I learned from the class and "In the Making" to this day. In addition to what I learned in school and from my mother, I've surrounded myself with art and artists in my personal life and have gleaned many pertinent practices and discoveries from association with them. I was commissioned to draw and have successfully completed a tattoo for an acquaintance, I have shown and sold some of my art in a festival, and have won first place for an oil painting in a local show. Hopefully, my knowledge of, practice of, and success in art and drawing will prove a useful resource for you to improve upon and expand art in your life.

  • public speaking

My parents fostered my natural ability to command attention and convey information through my voice from a very young age. I have been involved in public speaking since I played a small role in a community theatre production at the age of three. Since that time, I have obtained numerous roles of varying degrees in community and scholastic productions as well as acceptance to a somewhat prestigious program in Musical Theatre at Wright State University. In addition, I participated in my high school's Drama and Speech and Debate programs. Both programs gave me practice in memorization, enunciation, and projection as well as conveying an idea and incorporating the body while performing. Also, I learned how critically important relating and connecting to an audience is when trying to convey an idea or have an influence. Public Speaking requires confidence, certainty, and a willingness to share one's self and ideas with others. If you need help with this, hopefully my experience and years of practice in these areas will give you what you need to succeed!
