I moved to Japan in 1995 after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania with a B.A. in Sociology and a minor in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. During my 14 years in Japan, I have lived in Osaka, Kochi, and Kobe. I passed level one of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test in 2004 and have continued my studies since. I taught extensively in Kobe City public schools, before working as a bilingual teacher and administrator in a progressive private junior and senior high school.

I enjoy teaching very much, and have taught a wide variety of subjects in both English and Japanese. My most challenging teaching experience was a two-year senior thesis class taught entirely in Japanese. The foundation of the course was a comparison of two Japanese translations of Catcher in the Rye. Students wrote their theses based on topics introduced in the novel. I have also taught similar seminars using the Japanese translation of Bulfinch's Mythology, comparing Japanese traditional stories with Greek and Roman myths.
