ASVAB
I have tutored students in the Math portion and the English portion of this test. In the Math portion it is very important to break the word problems down in order to make sure the entire problem is understood before attempting to solve the problem. I have also found that even if a student cannot remember the particular formula for the circumference of a circle, for example...if they can use what they do know and go through each answer in the multiple choice set of answers they can eliminate a few that don't make sense and better choose one that does and make their chances greater of passing.
In the English portion it is very important to think about grammar and how it is used. If you can grammatically break a sentence down into pieces it is much more likely that you will come up with the right answer. In the end, again its not what you know but how you used what you know against what is presented in each problem. And sometimes its just being certain to clearly understand the question before attempting to answer it.
public speaking
I worked for the US Air Force from 1989 - 1998 as a informations systems specialist first and and software systems specialist beginning in 1993. Throughout my entire career with the Air Force I had to provide briefings to our Colonels within the Air Force Communications Command and to the General in charge when my area of expertise on a project was within their purview. During the later years I traveled around the US Armed Forces and gave briefings on the Air Force's progress on Y2K. The Air Force served as the Department of Defense lead service in this area. I gave talks at over 30 high level meetings with the Air Force during my tenure.
Several times each year I also provided an Air Force update to the corporate world at various conferences as Y2K approached.
In 1998 I went to work for EDS and continued my work in Y2K and also continued to give National seminars on the EDS software testing approach to Y2K at various conferences. I gave about a dozen talks to corporate sponsors concerning the EDS approach during my tenure.
