It's okay not to love English. But you or your child needs to be competent in reading and writing, not just to be successful in school settings, but also in life. Are you looking for someone knowledgeable, but approachable? Someone who knows all the rules to grammar and writing, but can actually help you understand how to use them? Someone who is as able to help parse Shakespearean sonnets as encourage you (or your child) to geek out to your favorite guilty pleasure reading? (It's okay; I get it!)
I have a BA and a MA in English, and a Master's in Education. I also received a minor in Humanities as an undergraduate, so I am able to tutor ancient to Rennaissance history/humanities courses.
I've worked with lots of different students, from high school youth in urban-core schools to detail-oriented college students working at very high levels. I am in contact with many of my former students: some as they continue in college courses, others who tell me they would not have graduated high school without me. All will attest that though I am laid-back, funny and helpful, I am very practical and have high expectations. I WILL NOT DO YOUR WORK FOR YOU...but I will help you learn.
I have taught many kinds of composition classes and worked in writing centers, so if you need help with writing (it doesn't matter what subject) I can help you organize your thoughts and become a better writer. I also worked at KU helping students with time management, test anxiety, note-taking and test-taking skills.
Whether you can't stand English, but gotta get those scores up, or if you eat books up like ice cream and just want to rock the SAT's or that AP English course...if you need some help with reading or writing, I'm your best bet.
Email me, and we'll figure out a plan to help you do your best.
