About Alec

Hello! My name is Alec and I'm currently a graduate student at NYU in the Music Composition program - I've just moved in to New York after living in Atlanta for four years while at Emory University. I've been a musician for my whole life (I started on Piano when I was about 8) and have conducted, composed, arranged, music directed, performed solo (voice and piano,) and performed with choral groups, a cappella groups, and small ensembles... in short, if something musical has to be done, I'm ready to give it a shot. I've had experience teaching children and adults in multiple styles (having performed classical, rock, jazz, and musical theatre) and have a strong background in theory, history, and ear training. Let me know if you'd like any more information - I'm happy to help!

More On Alec's Subjects

  • composition (music)

Hi! You can read more about my music experience on my general profile, but Composition in particular has been a part of my life for a number of years. I began composing towards the end of high school, and continued to study it as part of my Music Major at Emory University and am now attending NYU's graduate program in Music Composition. I have written for voice (w/piano), choir, solo piano, piano trio, chamber ensemble, electronics, and film. I've also had strong exposure to popular and music theater songwriting techniques (stuff you might not expect to learn in a conservatory!) and have particular experience with arranging for vocal ensembles (in popular, jazz, and choral styles.) Contact me if you'd like to know more!

  • ear training

Hi! You can read more about my general music experience on my profile, but ear training/aural skills is a particular specialty of mine. My very first piano teacher taught me the importance of understanding music aurally, and my second helped me to refine my listening/comprehension skills and put them in a music theory context. As a result, I've always given these skills a high priority. As part of my Music major at Emory University, I completed the college curriculum in ear-training as it relates to music theory concepts and was certified by a thorough entrance exam upon starting my graduate program at NYU. I have my own set of tricks for dictation, understanding harmony, and detecting chord types, qualities, and functions. Good aural skills, to me, are perhaps the most essential part of being a good musician, so you can be sure that I will do whatever I can to help you understand these concepts.

  • general music

Hi! Please read the blurb on my profile regarding my music experience and academic background - a "general music" class may teach you any sort of things, but if you need to work on theory, history, ear training, songwriting, and/or keyboard skills, I'd be happy to help!

  • music history

Hi! In my profile, you can read more about my experience with music in general - but in terms of music history, learning has been a lifelong process for me. I started learning the Piano during childhood, so was exposed to all different kinds of common-practice composers and repertoire. In addition, through choral singing, orchestral experience, musical theater, and a little jazz exposure, I continued to get to know a wide variety of musical styles/idioms inside and out of the classical world. I then got a formal education in the history of western music through a two-course curriculum as part of the Music Major at Emory, and was certified by an entrance exam upon beginning graduate music study at NYU. Last but not least - I'm a music nerd, so I've spent a lot of my time over the past few years absorbing more music ('classical' and otherwise) and developing an understanding of how it has evolved.
