I am a second career teacher. I began as a radio newscaster, and bring a strong background in news writing, mass communication and expository writing. Also, I can work with students who wish to learn confidence in public speaking.
I have a Master's degree in Secondary Education with an emphasis in English. This means that I am licensed as a teacher in the State of Hawaii to teach students between the ages of 12 and 18 years of age. I have also worked one year as an adjunct professor of Communications at Chaminade University of Honolulu.
Further, I have another Master's degree in Theater with an emphasis in acting and directing. If you need help with reading and memorization of lines or how to approach a role on stage or video, I can be of assistance.
In the past, I have worked as a tutor to English Language Learners here in Honolulu. My teaching style is to learn where each student stands in regard to their reading and writing levels. With that information, I will design lessons to work on any gaps in learning the student may have. I am well aware that English Language Learners do very well with written English and struggle to master the spoken word. Because I was a broadcaster, I use a slower and more concise speaking style with my students. I believe this helps them to have less confusion about understanding an English speaker.
