I have been a private, self-employed tutor since 2002. I have tutored the following subjects: Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, Trigonometry, Calculus, Statistics, Advanced Statistics, SAT Math, Medical Math, Fundamentals of Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics, English Composition, and Economics. I have not held another job save for two brief stints in 2007 and 2008, when demand for my services was reduced by economic conditions.
I was originally a chemistry major at Ohio University, but changed to political science before being graduated in 1991. I am now back at Ohio University completing a second degree economics because it applies the rigor of mathematics and statistics to the social sciences, government, and business. I aspire to be a professional economist.
I love tutoring because it gives me the opportunity to pass on directly what I have learned to students who want to learn. Prior to my tutoring career, I served in Ohio as a long-term substitute in Mathematics, Physcial Sciences, Earth Sciences, and Social Studies. I gained experience as a tutor while serving as a substitute teacher, and found that I felt a greater sense of accomplishment working with students one-on-one rather than "managing" a classroom.
Since 2002, I have had the pleasure of saving dozens of college careers from failure, and of helping several high school and middle school students discover their unrecognized ability in mathematics. My special talent is the ability to take a concept in mathematics and "break it down", as my students say, such that it becomes understandable and clear to the student. I do this by explaining it in "plain English", then showing them how to apply the concept to solve a problem. I try to make my explanation of a mathematical or scientific concept and its application as simple as possible.
In sum, my goal as a tutor is to clarify subject matter to students such that they become familiar enough with it to use it in their everyday lives.
