I am a state certified Business Education teacher. I also have certification and teaching experience in Middle School mathematics. I have worked as a mathematics tutor for after school services for 6-8th graders. In addition, I worked for one year as an adult education instructor. In this capacity, I taught reading, writing, math, science, and social studies to teenagers and adults pursuing a GED.
I obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1999. In 2007, I became a licensed teacher after completing a Master of Arts in Teaching (business and mathematics focus). I am currently working on a Master of Science degree in Library Science.
My teaching style is creative and organized. I believe tutoring time should be planned in advance, and each tutoring session should contain some of the same elements (vocab review, recap of main ideas, student setting his/her own goals until the next tutoring session, etc). I am good at relating the subject matter to a student's own life, which often helps with retention. I do not view struggling students as dumb or lazy, and work hard to help them feel successful, even when progress is difficult. Tutors/teachers should take care to give honest feedback to parents about each session. Finally, using manipulatives and various strategies keeps each session fresh for both the tutor and pupil!
