About Elberta

Hello everyone!

My name is Elberta, but everyone calls me 'Byrdie.' For me, the most important thing about educating others is the one-on-one connection and exchanging ideas. I'm highly skilled in mathematics, English, and all forms of art--including filmmaking, fine photography, and painting. I love sharing my knowledge with others but it means nothing unless they can share their ideas with me as well.

Taking what's known as the Socratic approach, I question my students. I challenge you all to be investigators of the world around you instead of merely telling you what I see. When needed, a gently and tolerantly steer you back on the right path and see how fun your school subjects can be--especially when it comes to commonly dreaded subjects like math.

I encourage all my students to approach their studies head-on whether math, English, science, art or any other subject. I help them see the power of their own thinking. I always tell them they can be anything they want to be. The future is theirs.

Go forth and prosper,

Byrdie G.

More On Elberta's Subjects

  • drawing

We're all natural born artists--whether our media is fine art, sculpture, medical arts, literary arts. We all have dynamic skills which we love performing, perform well, and which give us power in the world. But it's always enough to be a natural. Even us natural artists need practice and training. As a young student, my elective courses always involved some form of fine art--drawing, painting and film photography. Yes, film! Though my profession calls me to work with a lot of digital media such as digital video, digital photography and programs such as Adobe Creative Suite and Final Cut Studio, I'd be less than a professional without my primary skills. The drawing process shows people, old and young, how to see the world outside. The finished art piece shows the world what is inside us. I feel like I'm helping in shaping the world by helping students of all ages improve their drawing and painting skills.

  • elementary (k-6th)

"Imagination is more important than knowledge. For while knowledge defines all we currently know and understand, imagination points to all we might yet discover and create." -Albert Einstein If intergalactic aliens landed upon our plan and reviewed our history books and inventions, they might point to Einstein as one of Earth's smartest men. Expounding upon the works of Newton and other smart scientists, even Einstein knew his knowledge was ineffective unless he had the joy and imagination of a child. The elementary grades are the foundation of knowledge, and I have had the pleasure to experience this first-hand. I've tutored children ages 9-19 in class as a Teacher's Assistant and as a hired tutor. I am very familiar with English and Mathematics standards. I can deliver guidance in a way comfortable enough for the youngest of students, but also intriguing and challenging enough for older students. I enjoy what I do, and I hope to see you soon!

  • general computer

In the 1960s, the great media theorist Marshall McLuhan predicted that computers would become the most used medium of communication. How could he foresee the computer revolution when at that time the old patchboard computers weighed 2 tons and took up an entire room! He knew the value of a computer's instantaneous mechanical brain. Computers are an extension of our memory, our nervous system, our knowledge. Without them, we loose our voice in the world. Whatever you profession is--or will be--you need to be able to efficiently use a computer in order to be successful. I'm familiar with thousands of computer software programs on Linux, Mac OS, and Windows platforms. I personally license dozens of visual arts software including the latest versions of Photoshop, Final Cut, and more. I am well versed in a variety of mail programs and organizers (Entourage being one of my new favorites), and feel that unfortunately most people don't know how to take advantage of the great range of basic programs such as Microsoft Entourage, PowerPoint, Excel, and even Word. I love teaching and have a pleasant way about me. I'll work with any level of computer experience--from "never touched a computer before" to "need to brush up on a few skills."
