• 2007 - 1 year and 2 months Special Education experience as private tutor for autistic middle school student.

I am a patient and creative tutor, and I really enjoy working with students by finding out what inspires him or her and what his or her interests are. By creating a sense of understanding of what the student's strengths and weaknesses are, I am able to help the student effectively by tailoring lessons to his or her learning style using visual, audio, and hands-on lessons.

More On Crystal's Subjects

  • general computer

I am well-versed in both general PC and Mac knowledge. I am very familiar with Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, and I use a Macbook laptop daily for personal and school use. I am an active internet user and a blogger who uses the computer daily. I type 70 words per minute, and I have taken courses at CSU Los Angeles using Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign to create projects for class. I have worked many office positions as well that require the use of computers and software that are necessary for the day-to-day routines of those occupations. As a clerk for the CSU Los Angeles Housing Department, I learned to use Microsoft Office Access and worked on the computer often for the department's coordinator.

  • general music

I play the piano and I have learned basic music theory as well as technics. I can read basic music sheets, and I have played the piano for a year when I was in high school. I play up to level 2. I can help with general technique and basic level 1-2 piano music questions, as well as teach simple songs.

  • Chinese

I am a native Chinese Cantonese speaker and was born and raised in Hong Kong, China. I have taken the SAT II Chinese test and scored 750 on the test in 2002. I have also retested at CSU Los Angeles and the Foreign Language Department at CSULA said my Chinese level was at Chinese 300C. I also speak some Mandarin and Taiwanese, and I can read Chinese newspapers written in Traditional Chinese. I can also write in Traditional Chinese, although my written skills are more limited due to the lack of practice.

  • special needs

I have tutored an autistic middle-schooler for one year in 2008 and received training from SEEK Education, an institution that provides tutoring programs for parents and students with special needs, particularly children and young adults with autism. I was trained by consultants at SEEK Education, and I also observed firsthand for one year the methods used by the famous Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes Program at the center in Pasadena, CA, featured in the Newsweek article about learning disabilities and dyslexia. I taught the autistic student using Lindamood-Bell methods of word recognition, repetition, word attack, contextual reading, and more in combination with ABA to maximize reading and verbal skills for the student 2-3 times per week. Working with other tutors and behavioral consultants, I helped the student master life skills and tutored the student on all homework assignments as well as playing instruments for marching band and level 2 piano. Monitoring the student's daily sessions and progress using ABA helped the student excel in his classes throughout the year.

  • drawing

I have been drawing since I was five years old, and I have a portfolio of artwork that is available for review with some of my most recent work. My specialty is in rendering and illustrating the human face, but I am able to draw any subject and landscape. I am working to complete my bachelor's in art education, and I will be finishing my degree this June.

  • photography

I am a senior graduating with a BA in Art Education in June 2010, and I have completed many courses in photography since high school. I have taken up to Advanced Photography at my university, as well as having taken computer graphics to learn the basics of photo manipulation in Photoshop. I know both black and white photography and color photography, but I am best at doing black and white traditional photography and digital photography. My portfolio contains mainly black and white as well as digital photography from all different cameras--I have used Polaroids, a traditional manual camera with a macro lens, several simple point-and-shoot digital cameras, a video camera, and toy/plastic cameras. I also play with various digital cameras and cell phone cameras to make interesting images depending on my projects and my needs.

  • painting

I have been painting since I was 15 years old. I have been painting watercolor for about 3 years, and I have also painted in oils and acrylics in many classes at CSU Los Angeles. I have a portfolio of watercolor paintings that can be reviewed, and I have also posted some of my watercolor work online. I will be completing my bachelor's in art education this June as well, so I am well-trained in many different fine art forms: sculpture, ceramics, painting, and drawing.
