About Jaclyn

Hello, My name is Jaclyn S and I want to be your tutor in English, Reading, Writing, Literature, or Spanish. I can also provide you or your child acting lessons or volleyball lessons. Let me tell you a little bit about my qualifications:

I graduated in 2007 cum laude from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. Southwestern is a small, selective liberal arts institution that provided me with an excellent education in several fields. I double majored in Theatre and Women's Studies and received a minor in Spanish. When I graduated, I was named to the Dean's list seven consecutive semesters, had an academic scholarship and performance scholarship for theatre, was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa (a leadership honor society) and Sigma Delta Pi (Spanish Honor Society). In addition to these accomplishments, I was extremely active as an actor, director and designer in the theatre department, I founded and was president of a competitive volleyball club, was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha, and was named to the Student Judiciary board that oversaw cases of academic dishonesty. When I graduated, I had a 3.65 gpa and a 3.8/3.9 gpa in my majors, respectively.

When I graduated I was accepted to a program called Teach for America. This program is a prestigious non-profit that only accepts 10 percent of its applicants to teach in struggling schools across the nation. Once in Teach for America I was placed in Memphis as a member of the 2007 corps to teach 9th grade English and Theatre as well as coach volleyball in a struggling high school. While in TFA, I attended rigorous training and professional development to ensure that I was teaching my best. I was also held accountable for the academic success in my classroom to both my school and my Program Director. I completed my two year commitment to Teach for America, obtaining the highest honor of "Significant Gains" in my classroom by raising the average on the 9th grade English End of Course Test by 50 percent. I also directed two shows with my Theatre Class that my students self wrote and performed about their own life experiences that proved to be a great success for their development and their experiences. I am a qualified English teacher to tutor 6th through 12th grade.

For those interested in acting lessons: I have an extensive background in both acting and directing as well as scenic painting and make-up design. I graduated with a Theatre Degree, was involved in several shows at my college, as well as several shows in the Memphis community. I also have taught two classes now of high school theatre with topics ranging from the different areas of design, theatre history, play analysis, acting, and directing. If you have a big audition coming up for school, I can help you prepare that monologue to help you nab the part.

For those interested in Volleyball Lessons: I have coached competitive volleyball for 6 years and have played volleyball for close to 10. I coached with a prestigious program in Houston through much of my college summers, and coached two years at my high school placement. I can help you with all aspects of the game and have experience coaching girls as young as 8 and as old as 18. If you are struggling with your overhand serve, passing, hitting, or even setting, I can help you obtain those skills you need.

  • theatre

I graduated with a degree in Theatre and was a Theatre Performance Scholarship holder of the highest amount offered. I acted in several mainstage and student productions in both musicals and straight plays. I also directed a main stage production, and two student productions while in college, scenic painted and make-up designed. I took classes in: theatre history, acting, directing, makeup design, scenic painting, costume design, script analysis, musical theatre, voice lessons, feminist theatre, theatre for social justice, general design and basic stage craft. I am well versed in all things theatre and have an ample amount of experience in the field. In addition to my collegiate career, I have taught two theatre classes to high schoolers, produced two shows that they wrote and acted in and have acted in several theatre productions in the Memphis area at local theaters and Shakespeare festivals. I have also written and performed quite a bit of Slam Poetry in the Teach for America realm as well as the local poetry scene. I can help you with direct acting lessons, or just give you a general overview of what theatre is like so that you can feel prepared for any audition or class. If you are just curious about learning what theatre is like before you undertake it, I can also help you with that. I love teaching theatre and performance, and think it is some of the most fun you can possibly have if you like performance or design.

  • volleyball

As a player, I played competitive and club volleyball as a Middle Blocker and an Outside Hitter all through high school on a competitive team in Houston, Texas and was awarded 1st team All District by the time I graduated. I then founded and played on a competitive club volleyball team at my college. After I graduated from high school, I went on to coach every summer for clinics, camps and club teams with a prestigious club and camp runner in Houston, Debbie Sokol. It was there that for 3 years I gained my coaching skills with girls from age 8 to 18, with all ranging abilities and experience. Once I became a teacher, I coached at the high school level for two years, running practices and game play. I am skilled at helping new players grasp the fundamentals such as overhand serving, passing, setting, and hitting. I can also worked with more advanced players on more complicated quick attacks (particularly with Middle Blockers), blocking footwork/execution, digging, variations of serves, plays, different types of defenses and offenses, as well as basic team play and conditioning. I have over 10 years of experience playing volleyball, and 6 coaching. I can work with any age on any skill. If your child wants to make the middle school team or just needs to improve their fundamentals, I can help.
