About Nisse

My name is Nisse and I am a mathematics major and statistics minor from Macalester College.

My experience teaching started in high school when I began tutoring other children in my math classes. I found that beyond my ability to comprehend the material, I had a passion for explaining how to come to that same comprehension to others. I began teaching theater classes at a local summer camp. Since then, I have taken every opportunity to teach I could, from my work-study in college (running study sessions for Statistics and Calculus classes), to my jobs teaching robotics at the science museum, to my private tutoring lessons from people ages 10-23.

Recently I worked tutoring for an agency in Minnesota, speciallizing in standardized testing prep and mathematics.

Through all this experience I have come to one solid conclusion that should seem obvious. The people who learn are the ones who want to learn. Teaching is little more than providing the right type of motivation. I excelled in school because I had a fervor for learning and that passion drove me to explore the world through the classes I was taking. I approach teaching with that same passion, and therefore imbuing the student with an excitement for the material they are learning.

Besides teaching, I perform comedy and theater, and I think the two are inherently related. A teacher is a performer attempting to get a message across to their audience (student). I love this performance element of teaching, and especially find it exciting in a one on one setting such as tutoring. If you're the type of student who wants to become excited about the work that you're doing, than I'm the tutor for you.

I also love using sports to teach statistics, so if you are struggling with stats and are a sports fan, then I have the perfect lesson plan.

More On Nisse's Subjects

elementary (k-6th)

In my extensive experience with children, I have worked many times with kids under the age of 12. Whether I was being a Big Brother or volunteering at the Minnesota Children's Museum, I have always attempted to be a part of children learning. I think that crucial point in a young child's life is where learning can start or end, and I think I am able to help it start.

theatre

I have acted and directed since I started high-school, and was a devoted member of my college's theater and sketch comedy troupe. Since then I have taught classes in theater ranging from musicals, to clown work, to sketch writing and performing. Most of the students I have worked with have been between the ages of 10-16, I have directed plays with actors ranging in ages from 8-24.

discrete math

My first year of college I took Discrete Mathematics as my residential course. Beyond the education I received in the classroom, I also learned from living with the other students. My teacher became my advisor and now I still look back at that class as one of my most memorable and helpful classes of my college experience.
