About Debra

I was a tutor at Washburn University in the Educational Opportunity Program for 3 years. In that time, I tutored in various subjects, including College Algebra, English, History, Business, French, Astronomy, and Environmental Science. I have worked with students with various disabilities, including dyslexia, vision impairment, hearing impairment, and schizophrenia. My greatest strength as a tutor is my ability to relay information in multiple learning styles, and my willingness to put in the extra effort of making worksheets, flashcards, etc. in an attempt to help with a subject.

  • general computer

Because my mother had a job that used computers pretty frequently, she made it a priority to get a computer into our home as soon as possible. As a result, we got our first PC in 1994, long before they were common. AOL was still America Online, and there were several other big names in internet service. That first computer came with Windows 3.1, and back then, you still did a lot of things in DOS. Learning on a computer was much less complicated back then because they just weren't as complicated as they are now. I learned the basics and as the technology has progressed, so has my knowledge. I've worked with DOS, Windows 3.1, 95, 98, XP, and Vista. I've used Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, Firefox, Opera, and Flock. I've used telnet and ftp (both of which are fairly uncommon for people to even know about now). I've used Wordperfect and Microsoft Office (95, 97, 2003, and 2007). Because I learned computers so organically, I've been able to teach myself how to use multiple programs, and I'm never afraid to tackle a new one. Computers can be complicated. They're capable of so many things, it's easy to get overwhelmed. But knowing how things started and why they work the way they do, can make them seem ten times less intimidating. Anyone can learn to use the computer the way they need to.

  • study skills

I have read the Scholastic's A+ Guide to Taking Tests, which devotes several chapters to proper note-taking and studying. I have also participated in a Where There's a Will, There's an A program, another great program for learning note-taking, listening, and studying skills. As a tutor for the Washburn University Educational Opportunity Program (http://www.washburn.edu/services/eop), I was required to complete training hours for each semester that I was a tutor. I received several certifications through training in areas regarding learning styles, study skills, working with learning disabilities (including ADHD), and more. In my time as a tutor, I found that the majority of my time was spent showing students how to effectively use their textbook and the online resources the textbook manufacturer made available. I also worked closely with Visual-learning students to help them translate topics from their teachers' lectures or the textbook's written explanations into flashcards, charts, and pictures.
