About Erin

Hi! My name is Erin and I have been teaching for thirteen years! My students have ranged in ages--from preschool to adult. Most recently I have been teaching philosophy at the University of Kentucky and Bluegrass Community & Technical College, but decided to move back to Madison to be close to my family and friends.

My undergraduate work is in philosophy and religion. My graduate work is in philosophy and social theory. Social theory is an interdisciplinary field that has enabled me to learn about a lot of different subjects. Philosophy also requires that I have an expert knowledge of English and grammar, as well as logic and reasoning.

I am looking forward to hearing from you!

More On Erin's Subjects

  • drawing

I have been interested and involved with art for as long as I can remember. I am the child of an artist and art teacher, and visual arts have always been foundational in my life. In addition to taking art classes as a child, I used my extra curricular time in high school to advance my skills and pursue new types of media. I continued to take art classes in college, and was able to incorporate artistic projects into several of my non-art classes. I think that drawing is a fundamental part of art, but I also think that students often have unrealistic ideas of what drawing entails. Sure, technical skill is one aspect of drawing, but the rough sketches we see on display in museums show us that technique is not all there is--there is beauty in composition, contrast, the arc of a line, etc. For me, coming to understand composition better has been very rewarding for me as an artist. I would be thrilled to work with you to develop a personalized plan that will be as rewarding for you. I also encourage anyone interested in three-dimensional art to be comfortable with the two-dimentional art forms.

  • religion

Hello! While I was raised in a religious household, I chose to minor in religion during college and now have knowledge of religion that exceeds my Judeo-Christian upbringing. I will flat-out admit that I am not the tutor you want if you looking for spiritual guidance with religious texts. I understand the basics of a variety of religions, and then use my analytical skills to try to understand how each religion understands certain texts and traditions. For example, have you heard the theory that the Old Testament is an edited volume written by many different people? We can read "The Book of J" together and see what we think. I never attempt to preach a certain religion, but rather seek to engage text and tradition hoping for a greater understanding of religious history, as well as finding an appropriate place for religion in my world.

  • swimming

Hello! I am a former American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor who still loves to get in the pool and help students set and achieve goals. I have ten years of experience teaching children and adults, and with teaching adults how to work with their children in the water. My primary aim is always to develop my student's swimming skills, but I also make it a priority to provide and reinforce examples demonstrating how their skills can be used in times of distress. I like to focus on the skill as well as the situation. For example, it is one thing to talk about what to do if you get a cramp while swimming, but an entirely different thing to open students minds to the possibilities of other skills, say a back float. If you are a good swimmer, a bad swimmer, have a cramp, or are tired you will be safe so long as you can do a back float. This is especially important for adult swimmers and swimmers who have a fear of the water. Once they are sure they can be safe in the water with their minimum skills, they are better able to relax and work on learning more.
