About Jeffrey

Hello:)

My name is Jeffrey E. I am a graduate of Northern Arizona University with a Bachelor's degree in Music Education with a choral emphasis. During my time at NAU, I studied piano and voice. Upon graduating, I took the opportunity to become certified as substitute teacher for about four years and then became a general music teacher for a short while. I mention these teaching experiences because they have afforded me many opportunities to interact with K-12 students from mant different backgrounds.

So, I am very flexible and open-minded as a result of these experiences. My preferred tutoring subjects are sight-singing, music theory, ear-training, music history, and beginning/intermediate voice and piano training. My style of teaching is collaborative and discovery-based. I am interesting in working with students that have a positive attitude, a willingess to experiment with different approaches, and a desire to learn. Personally, I have an interest in all forms of art and music.

In addition, I am open to students who are in interested in a systematic but experimental approach to their music tutoring experience or a focus on specific songs or certain music topics In addition, I am currently working on another bachelor's degree and certificate program, so I am familiar with the student perspectives of motivation and multiple responsibilities. Finally, I have strong writing, reading, proofreading, and grammar skills. I hope all your tutoring experiences are positive and meaningful. Thank you.

More On Jeffrey's Subjects

  • ear training

Ear training isn't really as hard or scary as it may sound. If you simply start with basic intervals and rhythms as basic musical building units, then all the rest really falls into place rather easily. Yes, chords can be intimidating but not insurmountable. Ear training is learning to think musically--similar to learning to speak. One starts with simple vowels and consonants gradually(with practice!!!)becoming capable of constructing words and sentences. For me, language and music are similar cognitive processes in that both require "thought". So, if you maintain a positive mindset, music will reveal itself to you like reading a book and/or having a conversation. Of course, everyone can't think complex symphonies like Mozart, intricate guitar solos like Prince, or powerful drum riffs like Lars Ulrich of Metallica; but one can learn to hear musical sound(s) competently. Any melody or harmony can be accessed by hearing/thinking the sounds/notes individually and grouped together in different ways. It really is that interesting, exciting, and doable. As a music student, I worked very hard to overcome music anxiety in relation to learning about music and being able to "perform" well in testing/learning situations; so I can relate, remember, and bring those experiences of patient trial and error into our tutoring sessions. As your music tutor, it is important for me to help create positive, engaging learning situations in which--you--the client feels confident and secure.

  • sight singing

Sight-singing is a method of teaching someone to sing melodies without instrumental assistance. However, some approaches use accompaniment examples in integrative ways in order to create a more intense and authentic sight-singing experience. Consequently, the use of solfege or some other is important to building one's pitch awareness and tonal memory. I have a sight-singing book that is really quite good; it starts with simple easy melodies and develops through intermediate/advanced material. Another option would be you selecting/purchasing a sigh-singing book of your own. However, we can create melodies together to master or use melodies from your own music material with improvised harmonies as well. Ultimately, our tutoring sessions will be about boosting your confidence level in mastering melody.

  • voice (music)

Although I have studied voice at the university level and completed my junior recital(WHEW!), I have achieved most of my knowledge of the singing voice through hard work, dedication, and listening. Classically-speaking, I am classified as basso profundo or more simply--bass. I have many areas of interests other than classical art songs and opera arias. The use of the singing voice in jazz, country, soul, gospel, contemporary christian, and musical theater have great interest for me. My approach is very open to what songs you're into learning and developing your voice through those songs. Sheet music is optional. We can listen to songs and work on them without accompianment or use vocal track CD's if available. Vocal warm-ups are necessary thing though; it really doesn't matter what kind of music you're into singing. The voice is an amazing instrument capable of many things just like other instruments--only more personal. With practice, patience, and experimentation, we can develop your singing style and determine your voice placement/range--no matter the style. I am competent at piano accompaniment, but you can choose your own accompianist as you wish i.e., Jazz/Art song/Opera aria. The ultimate goal is to be to able sing with the greatest freedom in any style you choose!!!!
