About Donna

To Whom It May Concern:

Thank you for reviewing my file. Here is some background information you may be interested in knowing.

My credentials include a Master’s Degree in Special and Regular Education, a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Social Work, and twelve years of instructional experience in a school setting.

I have over eighteen years of experience teaching academic(all subjects), Independent Life Skills, and ESOL skills to students of all ages and abilities. These have included urban and suburban students with emotional disturbance, ADHD, OHI, Asperger's Syndrome, and moderate to severe reading and writing delays. I also have extensive experience with students with diverse backgrounds, from Hillside, Franklin, James Duffy, St. Joseph’s Villa, The Harley School, Catholic Family Center, and various volunteer opportunities, including my current work with Asian ESOL students.

This past June, I completed my ninth year at The Harley School as The Middle School Learning Specialist. Part of my responsibilities included teaching students (with and without a diagnosis) that attended resource room for remediation or teaching of new material. Additional responsibilities involved providing daily push-in support amongst different grades and classes, serving as case-manager, writing lesson plans, IEPs, and 504s, collaborating daily with families, teachers, and/or community service providers, serving as a class advisor, and providing sub support as needed.

I welcome the opportunity to discuss my experience and skills and how they would benefit you as well.

Thank you for your time and attention to this letter. I look forward to discussing a possible future partnership.

Respectfully yours,

Donna J. F.

More On Donna's Subjects

  • elementary (k-6th)

I have been working with students your age for many years, including this summer, as I have been tutoring a 5th grade student in reading and writing. I have also worked with elementary school children for the last 10 years at my job, where I have taught all subjects, and I also teach Sunday school. I can't think of anything else I would rather do than teach. I am looking forward to working with you and your family as we learn together about how you learn best, and how to be even more successful. Don’t forget, everyone has strengths and gifts. You may be having difficulties in school or learning a certain way, but we can work through that together, and hopefully, you will feel better about school and what you are doing very soon. Take care, and never give up.!

  • ESL/ESOL

Hello and thank you for taking the time to read about my work with students whose first language is not English. I have been teaching ESL/ESOL for over 10 years through the Literacy Volunteers program. Currently, I work with Chinese students, but have worked with students from many countries-including Laos, Cuba, Vietnam, Russia, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, and Japan. I learn as much from them as they do from me, and value each person's cultural background and language. While I will help you learn English, I won't expect you give up your own language, as this is a very important part of your history. It's exciting to learn about different cultures and languages, and I look forward to learning about you and your history.

  • special needs

My name is Ms. F. and I have been working with students of all ages and special needs for over 13 years. I am currently working with youngsters who have developmental disabilities such as Down’s syndrome, CP, and/or autism, and am tutoring a 5th grade boy with a reading disability. I have also taught students with special needs who have been labeled with Aspergers, and/or who have emotional, learning, reading, writing, non-verbal learning disorders, and/or speech disabilities. I know from experience however that the labels do not tell me who you are, only that you have unique learning differences and are able to learn and improve no matter what others think or say. Together, we will work with your strengths to improve in the areas that you, your family, and/or your school feel is necessary. I look forward to learning from you as well, since every teacher is a student, just as every student is a teacher. Most sincerely, Ms. F.
