I am a graduate of Columbia University and a former Broward County elementary school teacher, now retired. I am experienced in teaching at all levels of proficiency within the elementary curriculum (remedial, grade level, high achieving, gifted) as well as providing tutoring in the related areas of test preparation (SAT10, FCAT) and study skills development. I am experienced in working with students with ADD/ADHD.
As an Ivy League graduate who came to parenting and teaching after a career on Wall Street, I am focused on achieving the highest standards of excellence. My own children are in gifted programs and have skipped a grade. My daughter started her elementary education in a gifted program for Kindergarteners. Her pre-Kindergarten IQ qualified her for gifted placement, and pre-Kindergarten testing placed her reading and math skills at the second grade level. The pre-school period is a critical development phase and provides a unique opportunity for academic advancement.
Summer vacations, and winter and spring break periods provide opportunities for enrichment and advancement, or, where necessary, remediation. I especially enjoy providing programs of study to satisfy a student's unique needs during those periods. For high school students the summers before and after junior year are ideal periods to start preparation for the PSAT, SAT, and the ACT and to begin the college application/financial aid process.
For high school students I provide support in test taking (PSAT, SAT, ACT) and study skills development; for adults I provide support for the GED. I am also available to tutor German at all grade levels, elementary to adult.
My teaching is performance oriented. Objectives and goals are based on the desired outcomes established by the student’s parents. My specific approach is based on the demonstrated receptiveness of the child (learning style). Purposeful effort is made to empower the child to take command of his or her learning. Necessary study and test taking skills are taught and/or reinforced. Confidence is instilled through demonstrated accomplishment. These accomplishments then become an ongoing source of motivation for the child.
