About Justin

I'm finishing my Masters in Teaching this quarter with one last course, so I'm looking to tutor while I'm not in class. I have a BA in Political Science and Economics, and once I finish my masters I will be certified to teach middle and high school social studies. I have experience teaching English and Social Studies overseas, where I taught writing, literacy for grades seven through eleven, as well as SAT prep to the juniors. Many of these students were ELL, and in the process of teaching them I became well versed in ELL methods as well as effective writing and reading strategies.

I can tutor students in writing, reading, any history, economics and political science. I have a very flexible schedule during the week and can drive to most places in the South Sound area.

More On Justin's Subjects

  • ESL/ESOL

I have a total of two years teaching experience working with ESL students, overseas and in America. I taught at Horizon International School in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where most of my students were not fluent in English, and had poor spoken and written literacy in the English language. My English classes there were focused around process writing as a fluency building technique, and showed excellent results among my students. Building fluency requires practice and comfort with the language being acquired, and that requires a learn-by-doing approach. During my internship, I worked with students of Hispanic and Eastern European descent on content literacy and writing in the Social Studies. I am experienced and knowledgeable in ELL best practices, as well as writing and reading strategies. Furthermore, as a person who grew up overseas, I am intimately familiar with the challenges that someone working to learn a second language faces, and my teaching experience overseas has given me insights into the social and academic needs of ELL students.
