About Francine

I have been a elementary teacher for 20 plus years. My specialty is science and math. I have expertise in reading and literature for elementary level also. By elementary I mean that I have covered grades 4 through 8 extensively and these are my strengths. However, I have also taught science and math to grades 1-3.
I have a B.A. in Chemistry(1969) from Fort Wright College of the Holy Names, Spokane, WA.and a M.Ed.(2005)from Chaminade University of Honolulu.I have tutored students over the past 10 years on a one to one basis at my home.
Tutoring at my home would be ideal but if needed I will travel to another teaching location. Tutoring for an hour is ideal as it keeps a student focused and if needed it is possible to go longer. I enjoy teaching hands on if there are concepts hard to visualize for the student.
I am available not only afternoons but mornings also especially for home school students.

More On Francine's Subjects

  • elementary (k-6th)

I have taught 21 years in the Kailua area at St. John Vianney School. For most of that time I taught science in grades 5 through 8 daily. Besides science I have expertise in the core subject areas of elementary reading, spelling, mathematics grades 3-6, art, handwriting, writing skills with journal , book reports, and science reports being the focused areas. If a student has difficulty in an area I do use hands on activities to make the concept clearer. Besides my teaching experience, I have tutored both elementary and high school students over the past 10 years in elementary subjects and science, math and english grammar in the high school level. I make learning an experience that the student will be happy about and feel accomplished with personal confidence.

  • ESL/ESOL

During my 20 years of teaching, I worked one on one with students from Japan and Viet Nam who required help with learning elementary subjects in english. Although difficult for the student , working consistently with these students proved beneficial for the students. Beneficial because they gained confidence and were able to do better in all classroom subject areas. Patience is a forte that I have that enables the student to enjoy working with me and gain positiveness and not the negativeness or frustration that sometimes accompanies someone learning English as a second language.

  • study skills

I am semi retired and have taught on the Windward side for the last 21 years. I have a B.A. in math and chemistry as well as a masters in education recently (2005) from Chaminade University. I have 21 years of teaching to my background. At summer schools during the past 10 years as well as during the school day I have taught my students to organize their time and figure out the best way to make a subject more positive and thus produce a rewarding experience in tests, quizzes and even memory work. Working one on one and in an environment conducive to learning I find that my students excel in confidence and knowledge.
