I am a 23 year old recent graduate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I graduated with a bachelor's degree in English Literature. I have also taken an extensive array of courses in the various sciences including: Biology, Anatomy/Physiology, Chemistry, Psychology, as well as, Math and Statistics. I am returning to take additional classes at UNC-Chapel Hill in the Fall of '09 and am in the process of applying for entry into a Physician's Assistant Program. I graduated from Broughton High School, in Raleigh, NC in 2004, excelling in AP Biology, AP Statistics, and Honors English.
Fresh out of college and currently taking classes, I have a youthful and relevant approach to living and learning. If your interests or needs are in English/Writing, I can encourage you to think openly and critically about literature and the other arts, while forming concrete ideas or theories to expound on in a paper or project. I love to read and talk about books, authors, and relevant time periods. I have extensive experience writing short essays, as well as, longer term papers. My grasp on grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, citation, and overall organization is strong. I am confident that I can not only show you how to correct your writing style or grammar usage, but also allow you to really understand why we use these correct methods. I believe that reading and writing should be a pleasure, rather than a chore and I know I can make your experiences with it fun, as well as productive. To get the most out of our time, I would strongly encourage you to provide me with the works, ideas, and assignments you are dealing with, so I can come prepared with my own ideas, encouragements, and solutions to our task.
Similarly, my knowledge and practice of the sciences is fresh and equally as passionate. I have a comprehensive vision of the workings of the human body, having taken numerous classes in anatomy, physiology, microbiology, cell biology and development, as well as, general chemistry. I am most proficient in basic anatomy and physiology. It has always been my learning and teaching style to apply often convoluted scientific terms and mechanisms to every day life. Science is life and it is all around us. As soon as we grasp this idea, learning becomes easier when you can train your mind to see science at work. Again, with previous knowledge of your subject matter I will come prepared to encourage and challenge you to wrap your own mind around your task and we can solve these problems together. I can create visual aids and simulate interactive "labratory" activities, which I find very helpful in reinforcing scientific concepts.
Learning is an integrated activity, in which the more directions and methods used to reinforce ideas and theories, the better they will stick to one's mind and the better they will perform in a testing environment. I also believe that tutors are not just an outlet for help through a difficult math problem or a simple editor. They are coaches that enable a student to reveal the basic cognitive skills that they possess and help train the brain to grasp ideas in a more efficient and personal manner than can sometimes be acheived in a classroom. This work requires just as much effort from the student as the tutor. I will be sure to create a respectful, relaxed, and encouraging atmosphere in which both the student and I can work together and acheive great progress, while hopefully having some fun!
