About Courtney

As a child, I have always had the love for education as well as the love for others. In grade school I used to volunteer my help in a Pre-K class as well as a 3rd grade class where I would either work one on one with a child or hold group lessons. Ever since then I knew I wanted to be a teacher. My younger sister and cousins were my guniea pigs; We would play school all the time. One of my aunts was a principal at an elementary school and would give me the teacher edition to all the textbooks I would need(english, math, science, history, etc) to better teach the young ones. As I grew older and went on to high school, I yearned for the day when I could become a Teacher's Assistant. Once my time came (junior year), I assisted a 7th grade classroom. There, I taught various lessons, administered tests, graded papers, and became the students pride and joy. As I am entering a new phase In my life I have chosen to get my degree in Psychology and become a Teacher. I chose Psychology because I know it will help me to understand my students thus having a greater relationship with them as well as to better understand their different learning styles and ways to approach them. I have taken courses such as: Psychology of the African American Child, Educational Psychology, Seminar in Education, Principles of Education, and Behavior Modification. Courses that I will take upon completion of my course work at Southern University and A&M College are: Developmental Psychology, Psychology of Learning, and Psychology of Personality. Also, I have completed 100 hours of field experience at Belfair Montessori Magnet Elementary school where I worked under a 1,2,3rd grade Montessori teacher. At Belfair, I worked one on one with a child who had been held back twice from the 3rd grade. His reading comprehension was poor and he did not do well in math. To help him with his reading comprehension, I would print various worksheets offline that he would work on in class once he completed all his lessons for the day. While doing the worksheets, I would allow him to read a section and have him to stop to ask him various questions to make sure he was comprehending what he was reading that way, when It was time to answer the questions that followed he would get them all right. Occasionally he would read some on his own and upon successfully answering the questions, I would give him a treat. This not only pertained to him but the whole class; any time they did well on their work, I would reward them. The teacher would show me the lessons that she would want them to learn and even allowed me to teach them those lessons. I still volunteer at the elementary school to this day. I have also assisted a 5th grade class where I would grade papers and work with students one on one as well as in groups. I have enough experience to carry me forward but still have room to learn more.
