elementary (k-6th)
I have tutored elementary students for years. I have shown students with learning disabilities new ways to solve problems. For example, I had one student that couldn’t divide worth anything. BUT, when I translated the problems into cookies and kids (“You have 13 cookies and 3 kids, how many cookies does each kid get?”), she could solve the problems all day. I just had to find a new way to reach her.
I was also a key instructor at the University of Conn’s Gifted and Talented program. There I enriched the students with subjects like “Medieval Times”, “Historic Model Making”, and “Historic Battles”.
I have taught subjects as diverse as model rocketry and robots to elementary students. I’d be pleased to help your student excel.
general computer
I paid part of my way through college writing computer programs. Then I became a hardware/software design engineer. I hold a US patent and am internationally published. I know numerous microprocessors and computer languages.
I helped start a computer department at a local college and taught there for years.
I am currently teaching robotics and writing applications for the iPhone.
study skills
I have taught and tutored a wide range of subjects and age groups.
At the college level I have taught computers and robotics. I have presented workshops to professionals.
At the grade school level I have taught music, history, math, science, robotics, and English. I have shown students with learning disabilities new ways to solve problems. For example, I had one student that couldn’t divide worth anything. BUT, when I translated the problems into cookies and kids (“You have 13 cookies and 3 kids, how many cookies does each kid get?”), she could solve the problems all day. chess
My father taught me to play chess when I was in second grade. He beat me in hundreds of games. When I finally beat him, the story goes, I went dancing around the house “I beat Daddy! I beat Daddy!” I grew up with “Chess Parties” – my parents would invite a half a dozen people over for dinner, and after dinner we’d play chess. In 7th grade I was the champion of the junior high school; by 9th grade they sent me over to the senior high school to play. I won.
In college once, one of my professors asked me to stay after class. (Oh, what have I done?) He asked about my extracurricular activities. Then he narrowed in and asked if I had been teaching chess at the local elementary school. (I had.) It seems that his son had beaten him the night before with something I taught him.
If you want a good solid foundation in chess – getting the most out of each piece, getting pieces to work together, etc., or want to improve your game, contact me.
C++
C++ comes in many flavors. I am familiar with a number of these including Visual C++, Borland Builder (their version of Visual C++) and Objective C (Apple’s version of C++ for iPhone and MAC). There is also a cousin – C#.
I have many years experience teaching computer languages at the college level. I have taught all levels from grade school up. I have presented numerous workshops to computer professionals on subjects as diverse as “Cost Estimation of Software” and “Debugging”.
If you want a good, solid foundation in the language, and the ability to write bug free code that is easy to maintain, please contact me.
